The demand for nurses far exceeds the supply of nurses in the entire central region of the state. Local
educational institutions are unable to prepare an adequate supply of nurses to meet this growing
demand. The result is that healthcare facilities are unable to meet workforce demand.
Partnership Proposed
The five hospitals, the technical college, and the university in the central region have developed a viable
plan to increase the supply of both licensed practical nurses and registered nurses over the next ten
years.
Hospitals
Four area hospitals will contribute $1,000,000 each to the Nursing Partnership this year. Of the
$5,000,000, the university will be allocated $4,000,000, and the technical college will be allocated
$1,000,000. In addition, the hospitals each pledged to invest $50,000 a year in the Nursing Partnership
for the next five years. These annual funds will be split equally between the technical college and the
university.
Technical College
The technical college will use the funds to support new faculty, for program enrichment, and to improve
the training facilities so that it can produce at least 50 more licensed practical and registered nurses per
year. The funds are restricted to the uses specified in the agreement, but they are not endowed and can
be spent immediately.
University
The university will use the funds to support new faculty and program enrichment so that it can produce
at least 25 more registered nurses with bachelor’s degrees in Nursing per year and five with master’s
degrees who can serve as faculty for practical and associate degree nursing programs. The funds are
restricted to the uses specified in the agreement, and the university may spend $2,000,000 of the funds
immediately. The remaining $2,000,000 must be endowed for faculty support.
The attached table summarizes the five-year funding plan for the hospitals and the five-year spending
plan for the educational institutions. Other potential partners are being contacted to determine their
willingness to participate in the program.
Program Implementation
The agreement will be finalized and signed within three weeks, and the funds will be made available
within three months.
