REMEMBER
Critique, as a verb means to review or examine something critically. As a noun, it means a
serious examination and judgment of something
A good critique should provide critical commentary on the quality of the text.

To critique a piece of writing is to do the following:

 describe: give the reader a sense of the writer’s overall purpose and intent
 analyze: examine how the structure and language of the text convey its meaning
 interpret: state the significance or importance of each part of the text
 assess: make a judgment of the work’s worth or value

The Critique Format for Fiction/Literature

The introduction consists the context of the story or selection which includes name of
author and work, brief summary or description of work as a whole and general indication of
overall significance of work.
The body contains the literal description of the major elements or portions of the work and
interpretation including the relationship to the first major point. It also comprises the author’s
intention or what is the author trying to accomplish and the readers’ reaction or how do the
situations affect the moods and feelings of the readers.
The conclusion contains the overall interpretation of the elements studied, consideration of
those elements within the context of the work as a whole and critical assessment of the
value, worth, meaning, or significance of the work, both positive and negative. The ending
also discusses whether the plot resolves and brings closure to the crisis of the characters.

Study a sample critique below.

Jack London’s short story, “To Build a Fire,” is the tragic tale of a man who decides to
travel alone through the hostile environment of the Yukon in sub-freezing temperatures and
falls victim to the unrelenting and unforgiving power of nature.

London emphasizes the existential theme in “To Build a Fire” in several ways, the
most important of which is his selection of the setting in which the story takes place. The
story is set in the wilderness of the frozen Yukon during the harsh winter months when “there
was no sun nor hint of sun” in the sky (118). London places his solitary human character in
the perilous setting of the wilderness of the Yukon, which is enough to begin to illustrate his
theme, but when London combines this unforgiving environment with the deadly cold of the
Yukon winter, he creates a setting which is the epitome of the hostile, existential
environment.

Indeed, London does rely heavily on imagery to set the mood of the story, and in this
way he draws a picture of the merciless environment his character must endure. London
uses imagery with such skill that the reader can almost feel the severe and deadly cold of
the environment and can almost hear the “sharp, explosive crackle” when the man’s spit
would freeze in mid-air

With his classic style, Jack London has created an exciting and unforgettably tragic
tale which illustrates a modern philosophic theme. This story’s theme speaks of man’s need
to find meaning in the sufferings of his solitary existence in an environment which is both
hostile and indifferent to his sufferings. London illustrates and emphasizes this theme in
three ways: through his choice of setting, his imagery, and his artful placement of irony
within the story.

The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway’s best works of literature. The
protagonist of the book is an old fisherman, Santiago, which was down on his luck, but
his strength of mind helps him with hooking the largest marlin in the water. The other
character of the book is Manolin. This young boy is Santiago’s best and only friend. The
story is set in Cuba. The story is written in realistic tone. The major conflict is Santiago’s
three days long struggle with the fish.
The main theme of the story is accomplishment. The main part of the story describes
fight between lonely fisherman Santiago and a marlin. This fight is Santiago’s important
test of his skills. Hemingway describes the fight as a symbol of man’s strength and pride.
Hemingway wants to tell us that the man always has to be prepared to fight. The honor of
the man should order to fight to the end and not to give up, even though the mind is
telling him that struggle is absurd. Giving up on the fight would be a defeat.
The story is basically teaching us not to give up, even though our fight may seem
senseless. Hemingway wants his readers to realize that fighting shouldn’t have any
material meanings. One has to beat his opponent for his own satisfaction and to prove for
oneself that he is able to fight to the end.
The story relates to people’s everyday life. It doesn’t necessary mean that everyone have
to fight with strong marlin. It’s just a metaphor for people’s problems. We, just like
Santiago, have to accept our rival’s strength and power. And just like the protagonist of
The Old Man and The Sea, we cannot give up; we have to fight to the end of our
strength.
