Learning Kannada Audio Clip #01

2min, 27 sec
Pronouns and Introduction
Welcome to “Audio-Clip number 1” for Learning Kannada.
This is Ravindra Karnad and in this session, we will introduce the usage of some basic
pronouns and a couple of other simple words.

As an example situation for this session, we learn how to introduce ourselves in Kannada.

“Namaskaar”, à this is the common Indian greeting but when used in Kannada the last
syllable is elongated a bit. So “Namaskar” becomes “Namaskaara” in Kannada.

An introduction would be something like “Hello, I am Deepak” and in Kannada Deepak

would say “Namaskaara Naanu Deepak”.
“Naanu” is “I” so “I am Deepak” would be just “Naanu Deepak”.
This remains the same for the feminine gender as well.
For a girl who would want to say “Hello I am Radha”, she would say “Namaskaara,
Naanu Radha”

If one wants to be more specific and say “My name is Deepak”, then in Kannada this
would be “Nanna Hesaru Deepak”

Here Nanna is “my” and Hesaru is “name”. …so “My name is Deepak” simply
becomes “Nanna Hesaru Deepak” .
Likewise for a girl who would want to say “My name is Radha” she would say this in
Kannada as “Nanna Hesaru Radha”.

To Review what we learnt:

“I am Deepak” would be “Naanu Deepak” or “I am Radha” would be “Naanu Radha”
It’s the same for both genders.
Likewise, “My name is Deepak” becomes “Nanna Hesaru Deepak” and “My name is
Radha” becomes “Nanna Hesaru Radha

The new words that we have seen here in this audio clip are: Naanu: which is “I” where
as “Nanna” means “my”. Lastly, “Hesaru” means “Name”.

Thanks for listening and hope you enjoy learning Kannada with these series of audio
clips.
