INTRODUCTION
Hello, learner! Are you ready now to learn to new lesson for today? Okay, let’s start.
Festivals are geared towards cultural preservation and tourism. It is only here in the Philippines
that every municipality celebrates its festival annually in addition to provincial-wide and region-
wide festivals organized by the Department of Tourism. Festivals are classified into two
categories: religious festivals and non-religious festivals. We have learned a lot of colorful religious
festivals from the previous module. In this module, we will focus on visual art as reflected in non-
religious festival celebrations. You will understand what makes each of the Philippine festivals
unique through visual presentations.
OBJECTIVES
 Identify the Philippine Festivals in the Philippines;
 Discuss the uniqueness of each Philippine festival through a visual presentation;
 Reflect in a non-religious festival celebration in the Philippines;
 Make a flower using the elements and principles of festival and theatrical forms.

Non-Religious Festivals
Just as we have religious festivals, we also have several non-religious celebrations in the
Philippines. These festivals focus on the cultural and heritage aspect of our country and are
celebrated with enthusiasm and passion. Tourists even celebrate with the locals, taking in the
wondrous and artistic values of the costumes and props the locals have been prepared to
showcase. Below are a few of so many non-religious festivals we celebrate in
the Philippines.

A. PANAGBENGA FESTIVAL
▪ Panagbenga festival is a month-long celebration every February and
is held in Baguio, the summer capital of the Philippines.
▪ Its English name is The Blooming Flowers Festival, which means
“season of blooming”.
▪ The celebration is a tribute to the city’s beautifully grown flowers.
▪ It showcases exquisitely arranged flowers atop floats in the parade. It
also includes street dancing, presented by dancers dressed in flower-
inspired costumes with concepts of butterflies, bees, pots, and water
canisters.

B. MASSKARA FESTIVAL
▪ Celebrated every 3rd weekend of October in Bacolod, the City of
Smiles.
▪ Masskara is from the combination of the English word mass and the
Spanish word kara which means “face”.
▪ The celebration dramatizes the steadfast character of the Negrenses,
putting on a smiling face even when faced with challenges.
▪ It showcases colorful artistry in costumes and masks, which are
made with different color fabrics and patterns, woven together to create
ingenious pieces of intricate designs, embellished with shiny sequins,
textures feathers, multicolored beads, and other elements, partnered
with extravagant headpieces.

C. KAAMULAN FESTIVAL
▪ It is an ethnic festival held in Bukidnon from the 2nd half of February
to March 10.
▪ It celebrates the customs and traditions of the seven tribal groups of
Bukidnon region, the Matigsalug, Tigwahanun, Higaunu,
Umayamnun, Manobo, Bukidnon, and Talaandig.
▪ It showcases the unique indigenous culture through telling legendary
stories, reliving ancient rituals and doing traditional dances, colorful
floats, vibrant designs in their costumes and the powerful
choreography in the dances.

D. KADAYAWAN FESTIVAL
▪ A festival of thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, held in Davao
every 3rd week of August.
▪ Its name derived from the friendly greeting of Dabawenyo word,
“madayaw,” meaning good, valuable, superior, or beautiful.

▪ The festival is honoured by displaying various farming implements, fruits, flowers, vegetables,
rice, and corn grains as a tribute to the gods.
▪ Singing, dancing, and offerings to their divine protectors are the highlights of this thanksgiving
festival, showcasing colorful floats, tribal costumes, and jewelry.
