INTRODUCTION
Double salts are the salts which contains
two or more cation and anion obtained by
the combination of two different salts
which are crystallized in the same regular
ionic lattice. Some examples of double
salts are:
CARNALITE(KCLMgCl2.6H2O)
MOHR'S SALT[(NH4)2SO4.FeSO4.6H2O]
POTASAH ALUM(K2SO4.Al2(SO4)3.2H2O)

Another example of double salt

is [(NH4)2SO4. FeSO4.6H2O]. It is used as
the primary standard in volumetric
analysis. Its crystal does not lose water of
crystallization neither by efflorescence nor
is it oxidised in air . It is a stable salt.
AIM OF THE EXPERIMENT
PREPARATION OF MOHR’S
SALT BY THE PROCESS OF
CRYSTALLIZATION.
APPARATUS REQUIRED
1.250 ML OF BEAKER OR CONICAL FLASK
2.GLASS ROD
3.TRIPOD STAND
4…Funnel
5.Burner
6.Wire Gauge
7.Watch Glass
8.Filter Paper
9.China Dish
THEORY
When a solution containing equimolar
proportion of FeSO4 and (NH4)2SO4 is
crystallized, crystals of double salts
having monoclinic shape, pale green in
colour separates out.
The reaction is given as :-
FeSO4.7H2O+[(NH4)2SO] ->FeSO4.(NH4)2SO4.6H2O

Ferrous Ammonium Mohr’s Salt

Sulphate Sulphate

When dissolving FeSO4 in warm

Water a little amount of dil.H2SO4 is
added to prevent hydrolysis this
salt.
CHEMICALS
REQUIRED

➢ FERROUS
SULPHATE(FeSO4)
➢ Ammonium Sulphate
Crystals[(NH4)2SO4]
➢ Dil.H2SO4
PROCEDURE
1. 13.0 grams(0.05 moles) of FeSO4 and 6.6 grams
(0.05) moles pf (NH4)2SO2 are weighed separately.
2. These are dissolved separately in 20ml of distilled
water containing 1-2ml of dil.H2SO4. Then the
solution is stirred well.
3. The solution is filtered with the help of funnel so
as to remove suspended impurities.
4. After solution is heated in a china dish till the
crystallization point is reached.
5. The solution is kept undisturbed for cooling.
6. After one hour crystals of ferrous ammonium
sulpate are observed.
7. The obtained crystals are separated by
decantation.
8. The crystals are dried betweens the folds of the
filter paper.
9. The colour and the shape of the crystals are
observed.
OBSERVATION

• Weight of the crystals obtained= 3g

• Expected yield=10g

• Color of the crystal= Light Green

• Shape of the Crystal= Monoclinic

PRECAUTION
• Don’t allow the crystals to cool rapidly because
slow cooling gives good crystals.
• During crystallization solution should not be
disturbed and it should be covered with watch
glass.
• While preparing the crystals of Mohr’s salt heating
of solution should be done for short time only.
Long heating may cause the formation of Fe3+ ions.
These ions would form Ferric Ammonium Sulphate
along with Ferrous Ammonium Sulphate.
• Don't forget to add dil.H2SO4 while dissolving
FeSO4.
• If the solution becomes yellow in colour, throw
and start the process again.
