REFLECTION

George Berkeley

Berkeley believed that only the minds' perceptions and the Spirit that perceives are what exists in
reality, what people perceive every day is only the idea of an object's existence, but the objects
themselves are not perceived.

George Berkeley was an Irish philosopher best known for his defense of immaterialism, the thesis that
perceived objects are only ideas and do not exist outside the minds that perceive them.

This Berkeley calls this 'mind' or 'spirit'. Minds (as knowers) are distinct from ideas (as things known). For
an idea, to be is to be perceived (known). Since this holds for ideas in general, it holds for “sensations or
ideas imprinted on the sense” This means that Berkeley believed there are no real material qualities of
an object, that what are described as objects or physical matter are actually collections of ideas. These
ideas originate in the mind of God. To Berkeley, 'To be is to be perceived', meaning that all that exists is
our perception of things.

According to Berkeley there are only two kinds of things spirits and ideas. Spirits are simple, active
beings which produce and perceive ideas; ideas are passive beings which are produced and perceived

What this means is that we need to be open minded to everything that is happening or will happen. And
our thoughts and spirits are what we get our minds from that are difficult to understand.

The truth is our right path that we need to know in all our problems in our lives,no matter what
happens,a person needs an open mind and the truth is what is needed to solve the problems in our life
that are difficult to understand.
