1.0 SUMMARY OF FORCES FOR DESIGN OF END DIAPHRAGM AT P458

Voided slab diaphragm design is presented at pier locations P460 as indicated in elevation below.

1.1 LOADS

a) Service Condition:- Loads considered in this condition are Dead Loads, Super Imposed Loads Various possible
position & combinations of Live Load (or SV Load at appropriate position).

b) Jacking Up Condition:- Loads considered in this condition are Dead Loads of superstructure and
Super Imposed Dead Loads. The superstructure is supported on jacks.

c) Construction Stage:- Loads considered in this condition are self weight of superstructure and load from
middle support. The superstructure is considered to be supported on temporary supports at bearing locations.

The Diaphragm has been designed by following methodologies.

a) Deep Beam Method as given in IS 456:2000
b) Strut & Tie Method
The diaphragm is designed by all the above methodologies and critical requirements of reinforcement are
provided during detailing.

Deep Beam Method as per IS 456:2000

This method is mainly used for calculating tensile reinforcement and its distribution across the depth of
diaphragm

Strut & Tie Method

The Strut & Tie method is used for calculating the Tie Reinforcment at top and the Stresses in the Strut.
The Stresses are calculated at the most critical point for possible Load Combination and the Bearing Stresses
are checked as per IRC 112 - Equation : -16.13

2.1.2 LIVE LOAD CALCULATION

These will be calculated for various cases using the concept of effective width.
Loads will be placed to maximise a particular moment and for this effective widths will be calculated and loads
converted to load per metre width
Calculations for the effective width of slab

bef = Effective width of slab on which load acts

bef = α.a(1 - a / lo ) + b1
α = 2.6 Constant for continous slab for continous slab of b/l0 = 5.6
b1 = Breadth of concentration area of the load
a = Distance of c.g. of concentrated load from nearer support
b = Total Width Of Slab = 28 m
lo = effective span = 5.00 m
c = deck thickness = 0.25 m
Along traffic
b1 = 0.054 x 2 + 0.25 = 0.36 m For Class A (Table 2 IRC 6)
b1 = 0.054 x 2 + 0.23 = 0.34 m For Class 70R(W)
b1 = 0.054 x 2 + 4.57 = 4.68 m For Class 70R(T)

Loaded length Perpendicular to Traffic

Class A = 2*(0.054+0.25)+0.5

6.1.2 LIVE LOAD CALCULATION

These will be calculated for various cases using the concept of effective width.
Loads will be placed to maximise a particular moment and for this effective widths will be calculated and loads
converted to load per metre width
Calculations for the effective width of slab

bef = Effective width of slab on which load acts

bef = α.a(1 - a / lo ) + b1
α = 2.6 Constant for continous slab for continous slab of b/l0 = 5.6
b1 = Breadth of concentration area of the load
a = Distance of c.g. of concentrated load from nearer support
b = Total Width Of Slab = 28 m
lo = effective span = 5.00 m
c = deck thickness = 0.25 m
Along traffic
b1 = 0.054 x 2 + 0.25 = 0.36 m For Class A (Table 2 IRC 6)
b1 = 0.054 x 2 + 0.23 = 0.34 m For Class 70R(W)

8.3 Load Calculation-

3.1 Self Weight :

3
Self weight is calculated considering the concrete density of 25KN/m , command applied in midas civil.
Weight of Blisters has been added seperately

Total Dead load Comes out to be = 22858 kN

3.2 Superimposed loads:

The following assumptions is taken :

1 SIDL -CB (Crash Parapet) = 2 No's x 10.25 KN/m

= 20.5 kN/m

2
2 SSIDL - WC (Load Due to wearing Coat) = 12.35 m x 1.25 KN/m
= 15.4 kN/m

8.4 Live Load application in MIDAS

The Live Loads have been modelled in Midas Itself

The Span has been modelled in MIDAS and all loads have been applied.
Live Loads have been converted to equivalent static loads and for each nodal load corresponding transverse centrifugal
force along with its corresponding moment has been added.
Eccentricity for computing moment due to centrifugal force is evaluated in next section

8.4.1 Centrifugal Force Calculation

The MCD Command file is extracted for Worst Overturning Condition (Total min Fz at support nodes on inner curve)
2
In these command files the horizontal force load due to centrifugal action has been added as W x V /(127 x R)
The Centrifugal Force acts at 1.254m from top of Box voided slab, this force has been added as equivalent Force
and moment as Ly (local) = -C.F kN (centrifugal force) and mx (local) = C.F x 1.25 at the respective points
received from MCT File. The Loads are then applied as stated below and the Values of Reactions Measured.

The Following Live Load cases extracted from MCT command shell are applied in MIDAS
a) Vertical Loads
LL(Vertical)1 Min1-CLASS A+1-CLASS 70R_I_My28
LL(Vertical)2 Max1-CLASS A+1-CLASS 70R_I_My43

b) Centrifugal Force
LL(CF)1 MCT For Load Case CF_Min1-CLASS A+1-CLASS 70R_I_My28
LL(CF)2 MCT For Load Case CF_Max1-CLASS A+1-CLASS 70R_I_My43

b) Combination
LL(Vertical)1 = Impact factor x LL(CF)1
LL(Vertical)2 = Impact factor x LL(CF)2

Note:- In Midas the voided slab has been modelled as line model and the cross sections assigned are such that
they have on center Top Offset. Thus, moment due to centrifugal force are evaluated using eccentricity of
vehicle from top of voided slab.
