1) Derive the wave equation of a string and write down the set of solutions for it.
2) Consider a wave travelling along +x-axis through a string which has impedances 𝑧1 and 𝑧2
such that 𝑧1 < 𝑧2 , write down the wave equations of incident, reflected and transmitted waves
with diagrams.
3) Calculate the divergence (∇. 𝒇) and curl (∇ × 𝒇) of a given vector field 𝒇 = 𝑥 2 𝒊̂ + 3𝑥𝑧 2 𝒋̂ −
2𝑥𝑧𝒌̂
4) A wave displacement is given by 𝑦 = 0.1 𝑠𝑖𝑛(0.1𝑥 − 0.1𝑡). Find (a) the amplitude of the
wave (b) the magnitude of the propagation vector (c) the wavelength, (d) the time period, and
(e) the wave velocity.
5) A guitar string is 90 cm long and has a fundamental frequency of 124 Hz. Where should it
be pressed to produce a fundamental frequency of 186 Hz.
