I. Activity Title
“Paint Your Thought”

II. Introduction

Mental illnesses are conditions that affect emotion, thought, and behavior. Distress and
difficulty coping with daily duties at work, in the family, or in social situations can be symptoms of
mental diseases. Nearly one in five (19%) U.S. adults experience some form of mental illness.
One in 24 (4.1%) has a serious mental illness. One in 12 (8.5%) has a diagnosable substance
use disorder. Regardless of age, gender, location, income, social standing, race, ethnicity,
religion or spirituality, sexual orientation, family history, or other aspects of cultural identity,
anyone can be affected by mental illness. While mental illness can strike anyone at any age,
three-fourths of cases start before the age of 24. Overall well-being includes mental health thus,
physical health both influences and is influenced by it (Njoku, I., 2022).

The WHO estimated that 154 million Filipinos suffer from depression, 1 million from
schizophrenia, and 15.3 million from substance use disorders, while 877,000 die due to suicide
every year (Department of Health, 2018). Thus, mental disorders could greatly affect
employment and levels of education, most especially in ages 25 to 52 years (Hakulinen et al.,
2019). It was found in a study by Hakulinen et al. (2020) that individuals with a severe mental
disorder had notably lower levels of employment before, and more especially after, the
diagnosis of their disorder. Their overall incomes came primarily from transfer payments, and
the most affected were those diagnosed with schizophrenia. After receiving a mental disorder
diagnosis, more than half of these individuals received no employment earnings (Lally et al.,
2019; Martinez et al., 2020).

In Davao City, The Philippine Mental Health Association (PMHA) and mental health
proponents vowed to boost the awareness campaign and intervention programs to prevent the
rise of teenage suicide and depression. City Councilor Joselle Villafuerte remarked that Davao
City was among the cities with increased teenage suicide and depression cases. SPMC's
psychiatry institute has a 60% out of 100% who seek medical advice because of suffering from
depression (Sunstar, 2018). The institute caters to more than Region 11 and their patients come
from Zamboanga, Agusan, Butuan, and Cagayan de Oro. However, not all 60% of patients are
admitted to the institute because they only accept those who are already suicidal. Many
conditions affect the spike in suicide and depression incidence, such as bullying in schools, the
councilor said. She also indicated the city's rapid urbanization, which creates circumstances that
stress people, as one of the major culprits. In January 2022, Mental Wellness Center for
Homeless Building was constructed in Davao City. Duterte, I.S. (2022) stated that the
establishment is a welcome initiative of the local government not only to deliver a comfortable
refuge for homeless and mentally ill residents but also to manage the stigma encircling mental
health and boost awareness in the community. Since its recent launch, the center has already
recorded 76 admissions and discharged 55. Of the 55 discharged, 22 are from the Caraga
Region and Cotabato (Philippine News Agency, 2022).

With mental health needs increasing worldwide, psychiatric nursing would be a huge help for
patients who are suffering from such conditions. In psychiatric nursing, it offers understanding
and empathy for the patient who requires healing. They work in a variety of settings and provide
comprehensive care to individuals, families, groups, and communities. Also, they form strong
therapeutic relationships with individuals across the lifespan becoming familiar with their stories
and challenges to transform lives in a positive way. According to the American Psychiatric
Nurses Association, only psychiatric nurses are equipped to deal with a patient’s medical and
mental health needs. Along with the assessment, diagnosis, care, and treatment of mental
health and substance use disorders, they also work to promote well-being through prevention
and education (American Psychiatric Nurses Association, n.d).

III. Rationale for Exposure

In 2019, 1 in every 8 people, or 970 million people worldwide were living with a mental
disorder, with anxiety and depressive disorders as the most common (WHO, 2022). During the
pandemic, there was a rise in the number of people diagnosed with these mental disorders, with
an estimate of 26% to 28% increase in 2020. With these information, it is evident that mental
disorders are rampant in our society, and many individuals are in need of psychological help.

As a requirement under the School of Nursing curriculum, this exposure allows the student
nurses to explore nursing practice terms of psychiatric nursing. Thus, enabling them to hone
their skills particularly their therapeutic communication skills and their roles as both a caregiver
and an educator. Students will be provided first-hand experiences where they could learn and
execute the appropriate nursing interventions, procedures and therapeutic activities to help in
the management and/or recovery of patients. Through this, student nurses will be able to
develop their readiness and capability to engage patients with mental conditions and to respond
appropriately to the patients' holistic needs.

As aspiring AdDU Sui Generis Leaders, the proponents hold the university's vision of being
Men and Women for others. Through this exposure, student nurses could contribute to the
inadequate care patients with mental conditions receive. According to Moneymax (2021), there
are around 1,000 psychiatric nurses in the Philippines. With this, it is evident that there is a
deficiency in the nursing care practice. Moreover, the exposure would be valuable to the student
nurses to strive to lay a good foundation for a trusting relationship for it is a core component of a
caring relationship. Thus, maintaining and protecting the autonomy of a patient with mental
health conditions.

Tagged as “Paint Your Thought” this event hopes to be both a transformative and informative
learning exposure to the student nurses as well as to the clients for it would aim to become their
safe space that allows them to share their insights, emotions, and experiences through art
activities and feel comfortable to be cared for. Furthermore, in caring for patients with mental
health conditions, it is important to note that art therapy is established to be an effective
approach in expanding one’s self-perception, self-interaction, and communication with others
(Würzburg, 2021). The aim is to manage behaviours, process feelings, reduce stress and
anxiety, and increase self-esteem. Thereby, encouraging patients with mental conditions to
interact and communicate with student nurses through their own unique arts.

IV. Goal and Objectives

General Objectives
During the three-day exposure, the group will impart knowledge to patients with mental
conditions about the importance of art therapy. Additionally, the group will provide a venue for
the patients to share their insights on their achievements and/or failures in life through art by
expressing their emotions through their actions while making the proposed activity. With this,
they will be able to express themselves, which will provide them a sense of identity. Thus,
through providing health education, the clients will attain an optimal knowledge on art therapy
that is effective in establishing their self-identification and self-expression.
Specific Objectives
At the end of this therapy, clients will be able to:

A. Cognitive
1. Understand the value of using the arts as a different form of self-expression,
2. Determine clients state of creativeness,
3. Discuss the importance of creative therapy,
4. Distinguish the appropriate art activity for patients with mental health condition
5. Enumerate the steps on the distinguished physical activities,
6. Discover the experiences (positive/negative) of someone who is mentally ill,
7. Recognize the relevance of each client’s experiences to their present selves,
8. Examine the ability of the individual who are mentally ill to follow the prepared
activities,
9. Correlate the needs of the clients with the proposed activities, and
10. Conclude the event’s outcome (successful, unsuccessful, need for
improvements, etc).

B. Psychomotor
1. Assign specific tasks to group members for the activity proper,
2. Design an art therapy for mentally ill clients,
3. Integrate modern activities and ability of mentally ill clients to mobilize,
4. Facilitate an open-forum for mentally ill clients to vent out their insights on their
life experiences,
5. Establish rapport with the mentally ill clients,
6. Interact with the nurses, staff, and/or family members of the clients,
7. Integrate modern activities and the ability to mobile of mentally ill clients,
8. Maximize the given time period to conduct the activity,
9. Assist the clients in performing the appropriate art activities, and
10. Simulate the appropriate art activity with the clients.

C. Affective
1. Value the essence of teamwork,
2. Acknowledge the client’s insights and experiences,
3. Respect client’s privacy,
4. Reflect on the experiences of the mentally ill clients,
5. Empathize with the clients regarding their insights,
6. Allow the clients to express their insights regarding their life experiences,
7. Appreciate the clients’ time, and effort in cooperating with the activities,
8. Display an amiable attitude towards the nurses, staffs, and clients,

Game 2 - Telephone
Description: Just like the fun game called Telephone, this game may have been referred to as
"telephone," "whisper," or "pass the message" (Mcilroy, 2023). The Telephone Game is a great
team game, especially with a large group. The Telephone Game's primary goal is to amuse its
participants. However, those who play also reap some additional advantages. The Telephone
Game makes it crystal clear how even seemingly insignificant misunderstandings can have a
significant impact. It makes people laugh, is enjoyable for the players, and promotes group
relaxation. And serves as a starting point for talking about the value of attentive listening (Mann,
2021).

Rationale: They will have fun while improving their ability to relate to and interact with one

that he or she will try to guess it later
4. Based on the given noun, character, a topic, the participants will draw whatever is
related to it
5. The first member in the group will begin small, and the following participant will continue
the same drawing up to the last participant, to finish the picture for 10 seconds each for
the four participants who know the secret word.
6. The fifth participant who is facing at the back that does not know the secret word, will try
to guess the illustration on the paper drawn by his/her team and will say it out loud to be
corrected by the host.

Therapeutic Activity - Finger painting

Description: Modern finger painting was developed by Ruth Faison Shaw. This was initially
developed as a tool for fostering young children’s creative and imaginative abilities, but as time
went by this has become a hobby that people of all ages learned to enjoy (Britannica Kids, n.d.).
Unlike other forms of painting, training and technique is not necessary for this. The painter only
needs their fingers and paint to show their creativity. This activity triggers an interesting
connection between the sense of touch felt when touching the paint and connecting with what is
inside you that somehow shows your thoughts and feelings. Furthermore, finger painting has a
spiritual component that will help an individual to transcend to different places within themselves
allowing themselves to embrace their body, mind, and soul deeper (Downs, 2008).

Rationale: Finger painting will help the body and brain integrate information, it also activates
reward pathways such as reduce stress, lower anxiety levels and improve mood. It is also a
most relaxing and creative way to express feelings.
Objectives: The goal of this exercise is to allow the participants to express themselves via art
without fear of rejection, and it will also aid in the growth of their critical thinking abilities.

At the end of this activity, the client will be able to:

Cognitive:
● Develop their thinking and imagination by engaging it.
Psychomotor
● Engage in creative efforts that allow for expression.
● Utilize paint and paper for their artwork.
Affective
● Improve self-esteem
● Provide positive praise in clients' effort in expressing their creativity.

Materials:
● Canvas art board/White Painting Paper
● Acrylic Paint/ Water Color Paint
● Paint Brush

Mechanics:
1. Bring a clean sheet of paper and different colored paint
2. Draw an image to their liking and express their current emotions
3. Use hands to paint
