corrected, and known issues in System Release 4.7.

This chapter contains the following sections:

Features description
The following are the new features introduced in the System Release 4.7:

l Security

l Smart QoS and DPI Flexible

l Security updates

Security
Forced passwords and SNMP community strings change
Network security vulnerabilities are constantly evolving as threat actors seek new and intuitive ways to
gain access to a business network. Cambium Networks is constantly monitoring and preventing the
equipment from the security risks.

Current changes follow recently discovered security risks in users authentication algorithms and
equipment configurations using SNMP. They affects the default password and SNMP communities
behavior. Now it can be used only in default configuration. As soon as the user starts to prepare the radio
for a network deployment, all default passwords and SNMP communities must be changed.

Note

The user passwords for Firmware versions 4.7.0, 5.3.0 and SNMP Read-Write Community
Strings must be at least eight characters length.

Note

The SNMP remote access is disabled by default for the following scenarios:

l If the radio is upgraded from Firmware versions 5.1.3 or below to 5.3-RC14 or newer
Firmware version and default SNMP community strings are configured.

l If the configuration file from 5.1.3 or earlier Firmware is restored to the device.

l If the radio is reset to default on 5.3-RC14 or newer Firmware.

The following are the default configuration of ePMP 4.7 Beta radio:

ePMP System Release 4.7 Information 5

1. Log in to the UI using admin/admin credentials. The pop-up window appears as shown below:

2. After saving the password, disable the SNMP access and user accounts except admin account.

The Notification dialog box appears as shown below:

If the radio is upgraded from 5.1.3 or to the below version, then the following notifications appears:

1. If the admin user password is default, then the user gets a window to change it. Change the default
password or disable the account.

ePMP System Release 4.7 Information 6

2. If one or both SNMP communities are default and SNMP access is disabled as shown below:

The notification appears as shown below:

3. After enabling SNMP Remote Access, a pop-up notification is shown as below:

ePMP System Release 4.7 Information 7

4. If the radio has non-default admin password, then the user can perform the operations.

Smart QoS and DPI Flexible

This release introduces Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) feature, an extension of the ePMP Smart QoS
feature that can be enabled on AP and SMs. This feature allows the Smart QoS to be set on an application
type basis. This feature is supported for PTP 550, ePMP 3000, ePMP 3000L, and ePMP Force 300-
13/16/19/19R/25/CSM models and not supported for cnVision, N series, L-Indexed radios models.

DPI overview
DPI is an advanced method that provides a robust mechanism for executing network packet inspection
and prioritizing. It can examine the full contents of packets as they pass through Cambium Networks
Access Point (AP) and Subscriber Module (SM) and takes immediate action according to priority settings.

The goal of the DPI feature is to transmit user-critical applications traffic with priority, without the need
to mark application traffic at network edges. It allows achieving a high output by classifying all traffic by
priorities, providing wider bandwidth to certain applications.

Availability and high quality of service are the main indicators of the provider’s performance. Problems
like slow page downloads and stuttering sound during video calls are annoying for users. These types of
issues can be improved by managing the QoS with the DPI function.

The station in AP and SM mode manages the priority of traffic flow to be transmitted over the wireless
interface. DPI works with the Traffic Priority function simultaneously. The packet scheduler processes the
DPI traffic priority rules before the traffic priority rules. Configure the DPI priority rules on the AP and SM
for bi-directional priority.

A license key is required for AP only and the feature can be enabled without license key on SMs. It can be
obtained on Cambium Networks Site with an entitlement purchased from a local distributor. This license
is valid for a year. The DPI licensing uses the same process used to unlock the country in the ETSI region
or to get unlimited elevated radios connection. To view the license information, navigate to GUI > Tools >
License management.

ePMP System Release 4.7 Information 8

Figure 1: Fixed License Management

STA does not need a license that unlocks DPI usage. It is available by default. The SW license key is
provisional from GUI and SNMP and it is persistent once the user saves the license key. When a user
issues the factory default function to clear the device configuration, then manually enter the SW license
key again.

Configuring DPI
To configure DPI via GUI, navigate to Configuration > Network > Deep Packet Inspection and set Deep
Packet Inspection to Enabled and save the configuration. Now the users can observe the traffic statistics
by using applications from the Monitor > DPI section. Figure 2 shows the Deep Packet Inspection window.

Figure 2: Deep Packet Inspection window

Traffic statistics can be represented as Aggregated Applications Traffic for each application group and
Overall applications usage for each application (shown in Figure 3). A graphical donut chart can be
switched to show downlink or uplink statistics. To view the chart, navigate to GUI > Monitor > DPI.

ePMP System Release 4.7 Information 9

Figure 3: DPI chart

To configure the priority, navigate to Configuration > Quality of Service. Set the DPI Traffic Priority
setting to Enabled and configure the priority rules. Figure 4 represents configured rules for applications
and applications groups with different priorities.

Figure 4: Quality of Service

Table 1 lists and describes the elements in the Quality of Service page.

Table 1: Elements in the Quality of Service page

Element Description

Smart QoS Feature Locked: No valid license applied

State
Unlocked: Valid license is applied, and feature is unlocked

DPI Traffic Priority Enabled: Modifications to the DPI Traffic Priority are allowed and rules are
enforced.

Disabled: Modifications to the DPI Traffic Priority are not allowed and rules are
not enforced.

Type Application: the rule applies to a single application.

Application group: The rule applies traffic priority to all applications in the
group.

Target ID Defines the application group name or the name of the single application.

Priority Low: lowest traffic priority.

Voice: the highest priority for the most critical applications.

High: high traffic priority.

By default, all traffic passed over the air interface is low priority. The rules included in the table are
enforced starting with the first row of the table. DPI traffic priority rules are processed before the traffic
priority rules based on CoS and DSCP.

Warning

Each classification increases CPU utilization and it may degrades the system performance.
Network traffic planning is required to use the device processor efficiently.

The DPI feature provides traffic inspection statistics independent of whether the traffic priority is enabled
or not. The administrator can examine all applications traffic, and not only the prioritized ones.

Table 2 describes the applications in each application group. The list of applications which extend in the
upcoming software releases.

Security updates
To improve ePMP security, Cambium Networks is planning to deprecate legacy SSH algorithms usage for
ePMP and PTP 550 products in the upcoming software releases. The following key exchange, host-key,
message authentication code, and encryption algorithms are deprecated starting with Firmware version
4.7.0 and 5.2.0 (but still enabled):

l ssh-rsa – key algorithm (will be removed).

l diffie-hellman-group14-sha1 – kex algorithm (will be removed).

l hmac-sha1 – mac algorithm (will be removed).

Note

Starting from the Firmware version 4.8.0 and 5.3.0, deprecated algorithm support is turned
off by default.

Outdated SSH clients might lack the support of modern algorithms and be unable to establish an SSH
connection to ePMP devices with disabled support of deprecated algorithms. For more about these
security updates, see Deprecated SSH algorithms in ePMP series page.
