Assignment No. 1
CLASSIFY this rock as igneous or sedimentary or metamorphic and EXPLAIN why you
classified it that way.

Figure 1. SlideShare, Sedimentary rocks.

Figure 1 is called conglomerate, a sedimentary rock because it contains sediments and

being bound with fragments of quartz and jasper stones which is classified as clastic.

Figure 2. Geology.com, Coquina.

Figure 2 is called coquina, a sedimentary rock because of its visible broken or unbroken
shells of mollusks, corals and other invertebrates being bound together by the calcareous cement
(also known as limestone) as observed. Since these were form from living things, then it is
classified as non-clastic which is organic (bioclastic).

Figure 3. Easy Science For Kids, Fossils Worksheet -
FREE Printable Earth Science Hidden Word Puzzle.

Figure 3 is called fossiliferous limestone, a sedimentary rock as it contains sediments

bound with fossils or fossil traces. Since these were form from living things, then it is classified as
non-clastic which is organic (bioclastic).

Figure 4. Soils at UGA, Important Rocks &

Minerals | Soils at UGA.

Figure 4 is called gneiss, a metamorphic rock as it it shows alignments of layers which

makes it a foliated rock.

Figure 5. Geology.com, Obsidian: Igneous Rocks

- Pictures, Uses, Properties.

2
Figure 5 is called obsidian, an igneous rock as it is coal-like and no other visible fragments.
Just like coal, it is being cooled at the Earth’s surface which makes it extrusive. Since it is
extrusive, then obsidian should be a volcanic rock or a lava that is being cooled down at the Earth's
surface.

Figure 6. Geology.com, Igneous Rocks |

Pictures of Intrusive and Extrusive Rock Types

Figure 6 is called as quartz diorite, an igneous rock because there are traces of coal-like
rock (called as biotite mica as discussed). The mineral in white color is called feldspar as discussed.

Figure 7. ROCK “PICTIONARY” – Phoenix College.

Figure 7 is called schist, a metamorphic rock because it has no other fragments and it
shows alignments of layers which makes it a foliated rock.

BONUS:

Name the mineral that has the following properties:

• Non-metallic
• Can scratch fluorite but cannot scratch quartz
• Exhibits cleavage
• Contains the elements sodium & hydrogen

ANSWER: HORNBLENDE

Figure 8. Hyperphysics, Hornblende.

Properties:

❖ Luster (appearance): Non-metallic (black)

❖ Mohs Hardness Scale: 5 to 6
❖ Cleavage: Imperfect at 56º and 124º
❖ General Chemical Formula: (Ca, Na)2-3(Mg, Fe, Al)5(Al, Si)8O22(OH, F)2
