Activity No 2: Self-Check Questions

Directions: Using the data in (Figure), rank the seven regions of the world according to GDP
and then according to GDP per capita. 1 being the highest and 6 being the lowest.
A. Ranking GDP in Millions

Regions Figures

1. East Asia and Pacific $10,450,032

2. Latin America and Caribbean $5,339,390
3. South Asia $2,288,812
4. Europe and Central Asia $1,862, 384
5. Middle East and North Africa $1,541,900
6. Sub-Saharan Africa $1,287,650

B. Ranking GDP Per Capita in Millions

Regions Figures
1. Latin America and Caribbean $9, 536
2. Europe and Central Asia $7,118
3. East Asia and Pacific $5,536
4. Middle East and North Africa $3,456
5. Sub-Saharan Africa $1,657
6. South Asia $1,482

Conclusion:
Gross Domestic Product, the total market value of all final goods and services produced
in a country in a given year, equal to total consumer, investment and government spending, plus
the value of exports, minus the value of imports. The real GDP might be enough to indicate the
countries' economic growth.

What are the drawbacks to analyzing the global economy on a regional basis?
A region can have some of high-income countries and some of the low-income
countries. Aggregating per capita real GDP will vary widely across countries within a region, so
aggregating data for a region has little meaning.

Activity No 3: Self-Check
Directions: Cogently answer the following questions below.

1. What is the primary way in which economists measure standards of living?

The most common way to measure the economy is real gross domestic product, or real
GDP. GDP is the total value of everything goods and services produced in our economy. The
word "real" means that the total has been adjusted to remove the effects of inflation.

2. What are some of the other ways of comparing the standard of living in countries around the
world?

GDP per capita doesn't count unpaid work. Unpaid work includes critical activities like in-
home child or elder care, volunteer activities, and housework. Many activities that are included
in GDP couldn't occur if there weren't these support activities.

GDP per capita doesn't effectively measure pollution, safety, and health. For example, the
government may encourage the development of an industry that spews chemicals as part of its
manufacturing process. Elected officials only see the jobs created and the standard of living
measurement only counts the value of the goods produced.

3. What are the four other factors that determine the economic standard of living around the
world?

The four other factors that determine the economic standard of living around the world
Are:

1. Income
2. Gross domestic product (GDP)
3. Life expectancy
4. Economic opportunity
