COURSE OVERVIEW
This course involves the study of the historical forces, institutions and personalities that have shaped
sport and physical activities and traces the growth and development of competitive sport from
ancient civilisation to the present. Topics include the historical, philosophical and global
perspectives of sport, physical activity; sports as a tool for development, leisure in modernity and
leisure in the middle ages.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
• To introduce students to the history of traditional and Olympic sport.
• To enable students ‘appreciate the values of sport.
• To introduce to the students’, the importance of physical activities.
• To enable students to use sports as a tool for social development
• To enable students’, explore the various activities of sport for all ages.

LEARNING OUTCOME
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
1. Differentiate between traditional and Olympic sport.
2. Identify and explain the values of sport.
3. Identify the importance of physical activities.
4. Appreciate sports as a tool for social development
5. Appreciate the need for sport participation.
PLAGIARISM POLICY
Plagiarism in any form is unacceptable and shall be treated as serious offence. Appropriate suctions

ASSESSMENT AND GRADING


Quizzes (2): 20%
Presentations, class attendance and participation: 10%
Final exam 70%

GRADING SCALE
A = 80-100, B+ = 75-79, B = 70-74 C+= 65-69, C = 60-64 D+= 55-59,
D =50-54 E=45-49 F=0-44

CODE OF CONDUCT:
 Attendance and active participation in class are required for this course. Students are
expected to read all the assigned material before class and attend every class session fully
prepared to participate in discussions and activities. Lateness to lectures will not be
entertained.
 Assigned homework should be done and submitted on time.
 Students should show eagerness and enthusiasm towards the course.
 Cell phones must be switched off or put on silent mode before entering the lecture hall.
 Harassment in any form will not be tolerated.
 Students with disabilities will be appropriately accommodated. Please let me know at the
beginning of the semester if you need special attention.
 All students are expected to dress appropriately for all classroom courses.
