1 ECG353 SOIL ENGINEERING SEMESTER OCT 2021 - MAC 2022

ASSIGNMENT
INSTRUCTIONAL
SHEETS TO LECTURER
This assessment should address the following outcomes:

CO 1 Apply knowledge of soil engineering concepts responses to various geotechnical

situations (C3).
CO 2 Design solution for soil engineering problem with the design system component of
processes to meet specified need with appropriate consideration for safety environmental
consideration. (C5).

PO 1 Apply knowledge of mathematics, natural science, engineering fundamentals and an

engineering specialization to wide practical procedures and practices
PO 3 Design solutions for well-defined technical problems and assist with the design of
systems, components or processes to meet specified needs with appropriate consideration for
public health and safety, cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.

Distribution of CO:PO weightage:

 CO1-PO2 = 6%
 CO2-PO3 = 24%

Overall marks = 30%

CDIO ACTIVITIES
The following assignment sheets serve as an example for this task.
However, modifications of the assessment can be done according to the creativity of the
respective lecturer.

Mini Project
INSTRUCTION SHEETS
THIS COURSEWORK CONTRIBUTES 30% TO THE FINAL MARKS.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of this task, student must be able to:
1. Identify the subsurface investigation works commonly carried out for the proposed construction works (CO1 PO1)
2. Analyze the soil profile of the proposed construction works based on borehole profile. (CO2 PO3)
3. Evaluate different stresses in soil due to different surface loads. (CO2 PO3)

OVERVIEW
A client has an intention to build a circular shape concrete water tank with the load pressure of 100kPa in Masai, Johor as
shown in Figure 1. Therefore, a thorough and comprehensive subsurface exploration is a necessary preliminary item required
for the design and proposed construction method.

Based on the site investigation of borehole conducted from any development, analyse the data and produce soil profile by
plotting a graph of SPT-N value versus test depth for further design of the foundation for the proposed development. Evaluate
the compressive strength of the soil based on the correlation between Standard Penetration Test and Shear Strength
Parameters.

You are also required to calculate and plot the vertical stress distribution versus depth of the subsoil up to 10m depth (1m
interval at center line of the tank) in line to the proposed development of circular tank.

Figure 1 Proposed development of circular tank

TASK
1. Form a team of THREE to FOUR (3-4) persons.
2. The team must :
(i) Select TWO (2) boreholes for any site development in Malaysia.
(ii) Develop soil profile from the borehole.
(iii) Analyse the vertical stress imposed to the subsoil layer to a depth of 10m due to circular tank.
(iv) Develop a model of the tank with vertical stress distribution below the centre line of the tank as well as the
soil profile. Explain and justify the suitability of soil and the stress distribution due to circular tank.
3. In order to complete this assignment, students need to prepare the following task;
(i) Written report of the items as per item 2(i), (ii), (iii) and (iv).
(ii) Self-made video on the model as per item 2 (iv).
4. Submission date: 19 Nov 2021
