CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION TO INDUSTRIAL TRAINING

1.1 Introduction

One of the courses offered by Polytechnic Sultan Idris Shah is the Diploma in Information
Technology, which takes two and a half years to complete. Students must complete 20 weeks of
Industrial Training in any company, whether it is government or private. This is Industrial Training
are compulsory and need to be taken in the fifth semester to meet the requirements for the Diploma
in Information Technology.

The purpose of this Industrial Training is to give awareness to students about the real world of
work in factories, companies, contractors and so on. It also tries to instill in students a sense of
teamwork and foster positive relationships among employees. The goal of this Industrial Training
is to apply the theories learnt in class to real-world situations. Throughout the industrial training,
the knowledge gained will benefit the students later in their careers. Another goal is for students to
be able to practice safety standards while working and to build self-confidence in the workplace.

Furthermore, it also gives students job experience and build the relationship between students and
staff at the Industrial Training facility. On the other hand, this training has the potential to promote
a sense of cooperation among employees and trainees. Industrial Training gives students an
opportunity to experience real-world business scenarios. Industrial Training is necessary for all
students enrolled in specific programmed or courses before they can obtain their diploma
certificate.

3
1.2 Preliminary

Students are free to choose where they want to carry out their industrial training whether it is a
private or public sector. Each student who completes this industrial training must obey all the
companies or organization's rules. This industrial training is for 20 weeks and will be done in
accordance with the Institute Higher Education's regulations (IPT).

This industrial training course can give new perception to students about the real-world situation
in the workplace, where each job has its own set of laws that must be followed in order for a
company or organization to run successfully. Students can also learn how to deal with a variety of
scenarios by being exposed to the environment of the workspace.

As a result, this industry training can help to expand skilled workforce, which is in line with the
government's objective to require skilled graduates for the country's future development.

1.3 Industrial Training Objective

Student’s gets the opportunity to apply all of their knowledge and theories learned in the industrial
training course, as well expressing their own creativity. Students will have knowledge in how to
communicate effectively, thereby expanding relationships between workplace partners and the
people around them, resulting in faster teamwork and positive relationships with industrial
workers, all of which can lead to a sense of responsibility for a sense of trust (work) and balance
in all aspects.

Furthermore, trainees can enhance their own weaknesses by improving and think more rationally
in handling the task that has assigned by the employer / supervisor. Not only that, students also can
learn and take the good qualities from their employers during industrial training. Students can apply
their productive spirit to the challenges and obstacles that lay ahead.

4
The polytechnic's mission is to generate successful, excellent, and responsible students through
industrial training. To attain these aims, the Industrial Training and Liaison Unit (UPLI) has
defined several Industrial Training objectives that must be fulfill by the students. The following
are the goals mentioned:

I. Give student’s real-world employment experience.

From this perspective, students will have a better understanding of the real world of working
experience. They conduct training for 6 months, which is sufficient to go through all the
experiences and difficulties necessary to mound the students into exceptional workers when they
enter the real world of work.

II. Adapt to strict guidelines.

While completing Industrial Training in a company, trainees must adhere to all the company's
rules, whether it is a safety, discipline, or any other law. This will make it easy for trainees to
become familiar with all the rules while navigating the workplace without difficulty.

III. Instill qualities such as trust, dedication, and responsibility in students.

All the positive qualities should be present in every student because it affects almost the whole of
our daily lives. With this, Industrial Training can cultivate each student with all these qualities to
make it easier for them to learn first how to gain the trust of the firm and then be able to do the
work with great dedication and enthusiasm. Therefore, during this training, students need to
cultivate admirable qualities such as being trustworthy, honest, and responsible in every matter and
all the tasks that have been entrusted by the firm. With these good qualities, the firm will place
high trust in every move assigned to the students. Therefore, every student will get a good record
in terms of behavior, and it is very important to them when applying for a job upon graduation.

5
IV. Students can relate theory to practice and vice versa.

All theories and practices are inextricably connected. Students will have no trouble adapting a
challenging work environment because of this, and all theories and practices will be fully utilized
possible throughout Industrial Training. When students graduate from polytechnic, they will also
have a better understanding of the actual extent of their chosen job. Students will be aware to
strategies in both theory and practice during the Industrial Training. This can help students develop
abilities that they can apply during the training process, in everyday life, and in the actual world of
work.

V. Have a good relationship and bonding with the employees.

The positive interaction and friendliness demonstrated throughout this Industrial Training can help
to grow the association, exchange, and share viewpoints with company’s personnel, and strengthen
long-term relationships. As a result, the student-only organization can be enlarged with
connections from the working group or people with more experience than a student.

VI. Cultivate the spirit of teamwork.

Trainees might also instill employees with a culture of collaboration. As a result, the job done is
satisfactory and can lead to mutual understanding. Good employee relationships can be created
indirectly. Furthermore, the technique for working as a group in the organization can develop a
culture of mutual assistance and cooperation among co-workers.

6
VII. Examine student capabilities.
Students will be able to evaluate themselves based on six months of training in a company. They
can evaluate through the tasks completed throughout the training by highlighting the traits of good
leadership, and they can also provide ideas to help improve the business with the initial exposure
they receive. This is also documented in the Industrial Training book, which will be reviewed and
filled in by the supervisor when Industrial Training is completed.

Finally, the goal of this Industrial Training plays a critical role in preparing students to grasp all
aspects of work as well as the careers that they will confront later in life. As a student, the Industrial
Training for six months is extremely wise and positive for that will have a very favorable impact
in the student’s future.

7
1.4 Objectives of the Final Report of Industrial Training
Finally, the objective of this Industrial Training plays a critical role in preparing students to grasp
all aspects of work as well as the careers that they will face later in life. For a student, the
Polytechnic Industrial Training Department's management's act with the Industrial Training for 6
months is wise and positive because it will favor students the future. Not only that, this is will help
students and promote a critical, creative, and innovative thinking culture and encourage students
to learn to utilize the most up-to-date technology.

In this report, students are supposed to document their activities and experiences during their
Industrial Training session. This report is a crucial document because it can show that a student
has completed Industrial Training within the timeframe.

As a result, report writing necessitates careful observation from trainees. These standards also teach
students to follow all the rules and instructions. The examining lecturer, as well as the firm and
other parties who will be evaluating and referencing the report, must be able to understand it.

8
1.5 The importance of Industrial Training
This Industrial Training offers to a variety of interests for students before they enter the actual
world of work, ensuring that they do not have any issues after they graduate and begin working.
Industrial Training may provide students with the most beneficial experience as well as teach them
how to prepare for the working world and make them better-equipped skills once they have
completed the Industrial Training. It is critical that students perform their best for a specific
institution as well as for themselves. Furthermore, this Industrial Training makes students more
confident in themselves and less reliant on others, as well as changing students' attitudes toward
living more independently.

Furthermore, it has the potential to promote a sense of collaboration among students and all parties
as a whole team and institution. The nature of trust and responsibility is one of the most sought-
after qualities in conducting Industrial Training and in the real working world because it can
symbolize the polytechnic's image and persuade the institution to provide future students with more
opportunities to conduct Industrial Training in the institution as well as job offers upon graduation.
Industrial training can help students connect the theory they have learned in class with the practical
instruction they are receiving from their employees.

Students can also work more readily with the company's staff if they need assistance getting
information, and the relationship between students and department staff can be strengthened.

CHAPTER 3

WEEKLY SUMMARY

3.1 Introduction

This chapter provides an overview of the general weekly activities carried out throughout the
industrial training. The chapter that covers the supervisor’s tasks will be briefly discussed based
on the activities recorded in the reflection journal book. In a daily report book, each activity or
assignment will be noted. As a result, this part will briefly describe the activities and duties that I
completed during a semester of industrial training, which lasted twenty weeks. All activities will
be explained from week to week to wrap up the work that has been completed in a week and to
make the evaluation process easier. Because there are public holidays and company-advertised
holidays, the working days of the week do not have to be the same every week.

In addition to putting what I’ve learned at the polytechnic into practice, I’ve also been exposed to
the firm’s regulations and ethics, which I should follow whenever I’m in the company for industrial
training. During my industrial training at this organization, I was assigned to the software unit. The
supervisor has scheduled each job to facilitate the following task on each day. I was granted time
for 9 hours of industrial training per day, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Here's a week-by-week recap of my 20 weeks of industrial training. The table of the weekly
activities has shown in table 3.2.

CHAPTER 4

TECHNICAL REPORT

4.1 Introduction

Technical reports describe the tasks or work that are carried out during the industrial training.
Each task must adhere to the established process and procedures, which are carried out in stages.
It's all about ensuring that organizational management runs smoothly and without issues. In this
chapter, will be describing the tasks and works that were completed during the industrial training.
During the industrial training period, student was placed in Information Technology department
where I have learned on how to do BERNAMA checklist, wire crimping, add printer to PC,
troubleshoot internet connection, install windows 10, inspect WIFI 6 router to check the
condition of the router, configure IP address for firewall router, perform preventive maintenance,
remove advertisement in staff’s PC, set up projector for event rehearsal. Oversee the duties of
editorial staffs during PRU15, add printer in staff PC, fix internet issue, bring old PC’s and
monitors to store room, clean the server room, install IP phone in staff room, perform hardware
check and site visitation for network migration.

4.2 BERNAMA checklist

4.2.1 Introduction

A checklist trail is a procedure for ensuring that servers are connected, air conditioners are in
good working order, and routers and an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) are connected in
the server room. I must log into the BERNAMA Network Checklist System (BNCS) and enter
the routine record after examining the condition of each device. I also need to verify that every
website that BERNAMA offers its customers is accessible in order to finish the record. The staff
or supervisor will confirm the checklist after it has been turned in. Each round of this routine,
which should be performed every hour, will take about ten minutes.

I. This is the table where the BERNAMA checklist will be done.

4.3 Wire crimping

4.3.1 Introduction

Crimping Rj45 Connectors on Category 5 (Cat5) Or Category 6 (Cat6) Cable. Crimping is the
process of attaching a cable connector to the end of a Category 5 (Cat5) or Category 6 (Cat6) cable.
This procedure entails inserting the cable's wires into the connector and then compressing the
connector with a specialized tool known as a crimper to secure the wires in place. This establishes
a dependable and secure connection, allowing data to be transmitted over the cable. Crimping RJ-
45 connectors on Cat5 and Cat6 cables is a critical step in network installation and maintenance
because it ensures that the cables are properly connected and functional.

Step 1. Do prepared things needed to make a crossover cable.

4.5.1 Introduction

Preventive maintenance (PM) is a scheduled maintenance task performed on PC’s and CPUs to
prevent breakdowns and extend its lifespan. The goal of preventative maintenance is to detect
and correct potential problems before they occur, minimizing downtime and ensuring that the
equipment continues to perform at peak levels. Inspections and cleaning are common PM tasks.
The frequency of PM in BERNAMA is once in 6 months. By implementing a PM, BERNAMA
can proactively maintain their PC’s and CPUs, resulting in improved reliability, increased
efficiency, and reduced maintenance costs.

4.6.1 Introduction

A printer is a peripheral device that produces a hard copy of text or graphics from a computer or
other digital device. There are various types of printers available, including inkjet, laser, thermal,
and dot-matrix printers. They can be connected to a computer via USB, Ethernet, or wireless
connection and can print on various media such as paper, cardstock, and photo paper. Adding a
printer to a PC refers to the process of connecting a printer to a computer and installing any
necessary software or drivers. This allows the computer to communicate with the printer and send
print jobs to it. The process of adding a printer to a PC can vary depending on the type of printer
and the operating system of the computer. It may involve physically connecting the printer to the
computer using a cable such as USB, Ethernet or wireless connection, installing the printer driver
software, and configuring the printer settings in the computer's operating system.

52
4.7.2 Implementation

My supervisor gave me the task of renewing the Corporate Document Repository System
(CDRS). Before I begin designing the interface and add functions, I need to comprehend how the
current CDRS System operates, how users interact with the system, and what has to be upgraded
or enhanced. I was given the account and password to the mock-up version of the system so that I
could familiarize myself with it and test out each feature. I used FileZilla, an open-source FTP
programme, to send files from the development environment to the production server, which
houses the helpdesk system. I used Visual Studio Code for code editing and Putty for MYSQL
database.

CHAPTER 5
CONCLUSION

In summary, Industrial Training is a program implemented by Malaysia's Ministry of Higher

Education for Polytechnic students. It allows students to develop a wide range of skills that can be
applied in the future, particularly when they graduate and enter a challenging work environment.
The decision to place students in Industrial Training is a wise one as it allows them to gain insight
into the inner workings of an organization and understand the importance of a stable and systematic
management structure.

During the training, students have the opportunity to work with experienced professionals who
mentor them and provide guidance as they prepare to enter the workforce. I had the privilege of
participating in Industrial Training at Malaysia National News Agency (BERNAMA), where I
was assigned to the Teknologi Maklumat Komunikasi (TMK) department. This experience
allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the company's work procedures and expand my
expertise in the field of multimedia and information technology.

I am grateful for the positive working relationship I had with the company and the knowledge and
skills I gained during my training. I believe that this type of training should be mandatory for all
Polytechnic students as it provides them with a realistic view of the workplace and helps them to
be more confident and prepared when they enter the workforce. This training also encourages
students to communicate and work positively with their colleagues, which helps to foster a sense
of cooperation, mutual assistance, accountability, and trust.

In conclusion, I would like to express my gratitude to everyone at Malaysia National News

Agency (BERNAMA) and also Teknologi Maklumat Komunikasi (TMK) department, who
guided and supported me throughout my training. I hope that one day, my efforts and the company's
efforts will be recognized and appreciated.

CHAPTER 6

OPINION AND RECOMMENDATION

6.1 Introduction

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Malaysia National News Agency (BERNAMA) and
also Teknologi Maklumat Komunikasi (TMK) department. for giving me the chance to
successfully complete my Industrial Training at their organization and for the opportunity they
have given me. As a direct result of this experience, I have gained a considerable amount of new
information, and I have also experienced a shift in my perspective.

Following the completion of 20 weeks of training in which I had an active part, I have a deeper
comprehension of the significance of hands-on experience for students who are taking part in
Industrial Training. Because companies desire workers who are adaptable and capable of carrying
out a wide variety of responsibilities, trainees have the responsibility to gain more than just
academic information throughout their time in the training programme.

Participating in industrial training, which is, in my opinion, the greatest alternative, enables
students to gain exposure to the real world, acquire new skills, and benefit from the
experience gained there. It's possible that some students have a strong academic comprehension,
but they might not be able to apply that knowledge in real-world situations. These students may
have challenges in their chosen fields as a result of this in the years to come.

57
6.2 Opinion and Recommendations to the Organizations.

I. The employees of the organization have strong relationships and work

effectively as a team.

The key to the organization's success lies in its members having positive relationships and a
cooperative attitude, which the organization values. This helps in efficiently completing projects
in a timely manner due to the helpful demeanor of the staff.

II. Efficient job allocation for Industrial Training students.

Industrial Training students are aspiring to gain work experience and the company assesses their
understanding before assigning tasks. By recognizing students' skill levels and gradually
challenging them, the company has been able to allocate jobs effectively.

III. Offer Professional development for Industrial Training students.

Offer opportunities for professional development through training sessions, workshops, and
seminars. This helps the intern to enhance their skills, knowledge, and understanding of the
industry.

IV. Give consistent evaluations on the intern's work performance.

Provide regular feedback on the intern's performance to help them understand their strengths and
areas for improvement. This helps the intern to understand how they are performing and what they
can do to improve.

58
6.3 Opinion and Recommendations to the Polytechnic Organizations.

I. Emphasis on Practical Experience:

One of the key aspects of an internship is providing students with practical experience in their field
of study. The Polytechnic Sultan Idris Shah should focus on giving students hands-on experiences
and assignments that mimic real-world scenarios, instead of just theoretical knowledge. This will
give students a better understanding of their chosen field and help them develop practical skills
that will be valuable in their future careers.

II. Use of English in Documentation:

As English is widely used in the business world, it's essential that the Polytechnic Sultan Idris Shah
provides English versions of all documents related to the internship program. This will allow for
better communication between the organization and students, as well as with potential employers.
