Vie old man in the tobacco shop window looks
like a wax statute that’s been there since 1954.
Posters for old Showa-era idol movies are
displayed in store windows. Inside are bins of
old-fashioned candy and junk food, along with
A5rpm records.

There's the heavenly scent of slightly burnt soy

sauce hanging in the air. Hidden speakers play
old pop hits from decades past. Over at the
arcade, a little kid puts down his Game Boy
long enough to shoot at targets with a cork gun.
A group of young Japanese women try out
American pinball, probably for the first time.
Ancient Panasonic television sets broadcast old
black-and-white episodes of Astro Boy.

Is this really Odaiba, the city of the future?

Heck, what year is it?

Maybe you’d like to go to Japan to

see an inspiring vision of tomorrow:
trains propelled by magnetic
levitation, humanoid robots made by
Sony, cell phones smarter than most
human beings—that sort of thing.

But when | go to Tokyo, it’s to search for

signs of the past. | spend the days digging
for vintage clothes, LPs, and old anime, manga,
and toys. Why? Because in my humble opinion,
the late Showa era was when otaku culture and
Japan was at its peak. If time had stopped
somewhere between 1954 and 1989, that
would be fine with me.

I’m not the only one who feels this way. Japan
is in the grips of a Natsukashi (“nostalgia”)
Boom. It first began in the mid-’80s when
academics started searching ‘for hidden
meanings in the anime and manga of their
childhood. After the Bubble Economy started to
pop in 1989, a long recession settled in, and
the warm glow of the “good old days”
beckoned to the masses. Since then, only
technology has progressed. Pop culture has

34
gone in the opposite direction.

Anime and manga are now overpopulated with

remakes and rereleases. Advertising agencies
routinely trot out old characters like Astro Boy
and Joe Yabuki (from Tomorrow’s Joe) to help
rope in middle-aged consumers. Television is
clogged with retrospectives and clip shows
highlighting yesterday’s celebrities.

The past is reclaiming the present on all fronts.

The landfill town of Odaiba is supposed to be
the ultra-modern “city of tomorrow.” But it is
also home to a “Natsukashi Mall,” which tries
to evoke the feel of postwar Japan through
rickety food stands, tobacco shops, candy
vendors, and general stores filled with replicas
of old products (too bad the illusion falls
apart once you see the price tags).

At the Ramen Museum in Shin (New)

Yokohama, you'll find “Ramen
Town,” a painstaking re-creation of
a Tokyo cityscape circa 1958. From
concealed speakers in fabricated
back alleys come the taped sounds of
strolling singers and bar fights. You can
peep in on a typical postwar Japanese
household and watch a_ black-and-white
wrestling match on the TV over and over again
as it plays on a loop. There’s even a mock-up
movie theater, and the show is always the same.

But the ultimate symbol of the Natsukashi Boom

may be the recent PlayStation2 game Bokan:
Shonen Club Gaho (Adventure: Boys Club
Visual Graffiti) where players assume the role of
a young boy who lives in an impossible
amalgam of the Showa era, collecting candy,
watching TV, and reading manga.

are and money are two of your most -
precious commodities while running amok
around Tokyo on an otaku shopping
spree. You don’t want to waste a single
measurable unit of either. But with all that
dashing about from station to station,
you're still bound to get a little hungry
from time to time. The perfect solution: fast
food.

As they did on the rest of planet Earth,

chain restaurants like McDonald’s and
Kentucky Fried Chicken took over Japan
decades ago. Before you - start
complaining that you've already had a
bellyful of Big Macs and Popcorn Chicken
at home and abroad, keep in mind that
the Japanese menus have a few surprises
worth noting on them.

Some will tell you to spread for Kobe

beef while in Dai Nippon. I’m going
to tell you to try something really far
Pda F.y
out like the Teriyaki McBurger
(imagine a Quarter Pounder smoth-
ered in sugar-based soy sauce) or
the Fish McDippers with wasabi
sauce. Chicken items are hit and miss on
the McMenu owing to recent bird flu
scares, but you can still risk Mad Cow dis-
ease fo your heart’s content, or even
retreat into the comfort of a creamy
McCorn Soup.

Over at Kentucky Fried Chicken, you'll be

greeted byalife-sized statue of Colonel
Sanders (usually dressed up like Santa
Claus around Xmas), who offers you food
that’s possibly even greasier than its
American counterpart.

Even if the food alone isn’t much a draw

for you, it’s still worth a peek inside to see
how Japan has adopted foreign models of
commerce. A lunchtime rush at a Japanese
McDonald’s is a model of “fast, friendly

service” that probably has McDonald’s
founder Ray Kroc beaming down from
heaven daily.

Japanese McDonald’s are also killer

people-watching spots. There’s a pretty
young woman toying with her cell phone
and shoveling in French fries with her left
hand. A pokerfaced businessman barely
touches his coffee and watches a
Supersized wide-screen TV playing the
video for the Christina Aguilera song
“Dirrty.” A frightening-looking cardboard
cutout of famed hamburger clown
Ronarudo Makudonarudo surveys his
works over by the trash bins.

After comparing and contrasting Japan-

US franchises, real adventurous types
may also want to check out the boun-
ty of fast food that’s yet to leave the
Land of the Rising Sun . . . some-
times with good reason.

Japanese friends of mine swear by

a chain called Mos Burger, but the
meal | had in Kabuki-cho was smoth-
ered in lukewarm tomato sauces and
served up on an increasingly soggy bun
(fittingly, ex-Sex Pistol John Lydon, AKA
Johnny Rotten, is said to be a fan of these

however, was a pleasant experience,
(This page) The McDonald's in Kabuki-cho has a statue of the
