APA REFERENCING GENERAL FORMAT

− The list of sources should be arranged in alphabetical order and should appear
on a separate page or pages at the end of the document.
− If an author has more than one source being cited, the items should be listed in
chronological order with the earliest date listed first.
− The author(s) must be listed with their surname first, followed by their first and
middle initials.
− Up to 20 authors can be included in an entry. In the unlikely event that there
are more than 20 authors of a source, the first 19 should be listed followed by a
number of dots and then the final author.
− The name of the author(s) should be followed by the date of publication (in
brackets), then the full title of the source (in italics), followed by a publisher.

REVIEW STUDY GOALS

− The credibility/reliability of sources can and should be

ascertained by considering five questions.
− A list of sources (= referencing) is essential for any academic
work citing the work of others. It is part of the academic
honesty.
− APA Style distinguishes between three broad categories of
source: textual work, audiovisual work, and online media.
There are firm guidelines for each of these categories.
