initiate ALM 555 INT FLT 38. This calibration will not
result in any operational or performance difference for
the affected units. NOTICE
Do not install new calibration on an emPact

Engine will not run without functioning ECU.
Download new calibration for affected units at the
earliest convenience. Continuing to run engine
without new calibration downloaded software may
result in ECU module failure.

NOTE: Verify that the original factory calibration is

installed in the ESM module before downloading the
new calibration. See Connecting PC to ECU on page 5

to verify original factory calibration number. The new
calibration must be installed only when the ECU has
the original factory calibration. See Table 1 and Table
2. Be sure to installed the correct new calibration per
the original factory calibration. The new calibration
addresses ALM 555 INT FLT 38 only and does not
affect engine performance from the original factory
calibration. Installing an incompatible calibration will
prevent the engine from starting and running.

1. Locate the RS-232 serial cable supplied by
Waukesha.
2. Connect the 9-pin end of the RS-232 serial cable
to the PC’s communication port. Typically, this is
port 1 (also referred to as COM 1, serial a or serial

1 ECU
1. Connect ESP ECU communication cable to the
computer and start the ESP program.
NOTE: Depending on engine model and ESP version,
the “View Faults”, “Version Details” and “Send
Calibration to ECU” button location may vary. The
buttons may be located on the lower button bar of
each interface screen or on the [F10] and [F11]
screens.
2. Click the “View Faults” button to verify whether any
faults are active. If any faults are active, correct all
faults before proceeding (see Figure 4).
IMPORTANT: Be sure to check VIEW FAULT screen
3 for existing faults when checking the original faction
calibration number. If ALM 555 INT FLT 38 is listed,
4 there is no need to download the new calibration. The
ECU should be replaced.

4 - 9-Pin Connector
3. Connect the 8-pin Deutsch connector of the serial
cable to the “Service Interface” connection on the
side of the ECU (see Figure 2).
4. Make sure all connections are secure.
Some laptops do not have a serial port and need an
adaptor to interface with the ECU. The preferred
method is to utilize a docking station adapter. A Figure 4
second alternative is to use a high quality USB to
serial adapter. 3. From any screen, record the “Calibration Part
Number” from the title bar at the top of the screen
(see Figure 5).
