prevent the engine from starting and running.

3. Download and unzip file.
CONNECTING PC TO ECU
The ESP must have a serial port connection for the
computer end of the ESP cable. A special 96 in. 9-pin
connection cable (P/N C740269) is required to use the
ESP. One cable comes with the engine along with the
other shipped-loose components. The cable length
can be extended by adding a standard DB-9 serial
cable.

NOTE: The PC can be connected to the ECU via a
modem connection. See USING A MODEM FOR
REMOTE MONITORING in Form 6388-1 for more
information on modem connections and ESP start-up
information.
NOTE: If the ESP software and associated
workspace files are not saved to your PC’s hard drive,
complete the steps under the INSTALLING ESP in
Form 6388-1.
1. Locate the RS-232 serial cable supplied by
Waukesha.
2. Connect the 9-pin end of the RS-232 serial cable
to the PC’s communication port. Typically, this is
port 1 (also referred to as COM 1, serial a or serial
1) (see Figure 2).

DOWNLOADING NEW CALIBRATION TO

1 ECU
1. Connect ESP ECU communication cable to the
computer and start the ESP program.
NOTE: Depending on engine model and ESP version,
the “View Faults”, “Version Details” and “Send
Calibration to ECU” button location may vary. The
buttons may be located on the lower button bar of
each interface screen or on the [F10] and [F11]
screens.
2. Click the “View Faults” button to verify whether any
faults are active. If any faults are active, correct all
faults before proceeding (see Figure 4).
IMPORTANT: Be sure to check VIEW FAULT screen
3 for existing faults when checking the original faction
calibration number. If ALM 555 INT FLT 38 is listed,
4 there is no need to download the new calibration. The
ECU should be replaced.

3. Connect the 8-pin Deutsch connector of the serial
cable to the “Service Interface” connection on the
side of the ECU (see Figure 2).
4. Make sure all connections are secure.
Some laptops do not have a serial port and need an
adaptor to interface with the ECU. The preferred
method is to utilize a docking station adapter. A Figure 4
second alternative is to use a high quality USB to
serial adapter. 3. From any screen, record the “Calibration Part
Number” from the title bar at the top of the screen
(see Figure 5).

4. Click the “Version Details” button and record the
information by clicking the “Copy to Clipboard”
button, then paste into Word, Excel or other
applicable program (see Figure 6).

5. Click the “Send Calibration to ECU” button. This
will open a browse window (see Figure 7).

6. In the browse window, navigate and select the
correct calibration file to be downloaded to the
ECU, then click the “Open” button or double click
on the calibration to start the download (see
Figure 7).

7. The new calibration download may take several
minutes. When the calibration is successfully
downloaded, a “Success” message will pop up.
Click the “OK” button to confirm (see Figure 8).

8. Exit and restart ESP to view the new calibration
part number on the title bar or by clicking on
Version Details. Verify the new calibration part
number matches the calibration selected for
download.
9. Click the “View Faults” button to verify that no
faults are active. If no faults are active the ECU is
ready for operation. If ESD 553 Security Violation
is active, an incorrect calibration was downloaded
and the engine will not start. Review the previously
recorded calibration part number, select the
correct calibration from page 2 and load the
correct calibration. If ESD 553 Security Violation
fault is still active, record Version Details and
contact the GE Waukesha Engine service
department. Have the before and after Version
Details information available.
