GROWTH AND PRODUCTION EVALUATION OF BANJAR TANGERINE ON 11

ROOTSTOCK VARIETIES AT TIDAL SWAMP LAND IN SOUTH KALIMANTAN

In Indonesia, citrus can be grown in lowland to highland on different types of soil, the dry land,
tidal swamp land, peat land and some even in paddy fields. Until now citrus farmers in Indonesia only
recognize one rootstock varieties, Japansche citroen, which have been proven of remarkable
adaptability to various conditions of land as mentioned above. Evaluation on growth and production of
Banjar Tangerine grafted on 11 rootstocks, namely Japansche citroen (JC), Rough lemon (RL), AA
Sweet 23, Sweet AA 32, Poncirus trifoliata, Citrumello 4475, Volkameriana, Sweet orange, Emperor,
Benton and Kunci-01 had been conducted on tidal swamp land type B at the experimental field
Belandean, Alalak District, Barito Kuala Regency, South Kalimantan. Planting seeds was designed
based on split plot design and was replicated 3 times with 3 trees of experimental units. The main plot
was Banjar Tangerine on various rootstock varieties grown in the surjan and tukungan system; while
the secondary plot was the eleven rootstock varieties mentioned above.
At the age of 4 years of citrus trees in surjan and tukungan system were relatively the same.
Growth of tangerine trees with rootstock Volkameriana, Benton, Citrumello-4475, JC and Manis A 32
have the highest growth, from 180,0 - 263,3 cm, while the lowest tree growth on Poncirus trifoliata,
which is about 156,8 - 165 cm, which is known as dwarf rootstock. Rootstock varieties Volkameriana,
Benton, Citrumello-4475 and Manis 32 consistently has rootstock diameter, scion diameter, and tajuk
length were respectively from 8,1 - 10.2 cm, 5,5 – 8,1 cm, and 197-305 cm respectively. Growth of
Banjar Tangerine on rootstock Manis AA 23, AA 32, and Citrumello-4475 showed the phenomenon of
elephantiasis. If compared with other varieties, rootstock Volkameriana, Rough Lemon, and Sweet
Orange were proved relatively susceptible to stem rot and root rot disease Phythopthora sp.

Figure 1. Citrus Tree on Tidal Swamp Land with surjan dan tukungan system

Production of the first year did not reflect the real productivity potential. The first highest
production of Banjar Tangerine on tidal swamp land with surjan system was obtained from the trees
with rootstock Citrumello-4475 and Poncirus trifoliate, ie 13,5 kg and 7,4 kg per tree, while those
planted on tukungan system was from rootstock Poncirus trifoliata, Emperror, Citrumello-4475, and
Manis AA 32 with production per tree ranges from 8,1 - 10 kg. The number of citrus seed per rootstock
AA 32, Poncirus trifoliata, and Sweet orange on surjan system had seed number 3-5 per fruit that
require further observation of its seedless characteristic. Banjar Tangerine on rootstock Citrumello-
4475, AA 32, and Poncirus trifoliata production had more consistent growth and production than those
with other rootstocks varieties, either grown on tidal swamp land with surjan or tukungan system.
Further evaluation needs to be done to consolidate the results of this research.
