F. Working out good new routines

A FRESHER’S LIFE IS NOT EASY!

Each year, thousands of high school graduates join the ranks of university students. Many of them find it
difficult to get used to their new lifestyle and the requirements of higher education. If you’re one of them,
here are a few tips to help you.

5.1.
It’s hardly ever enough to take just one or two tours around your campus. Exploring it in detail will help you
to get to know where everything is and will save you a lot of time in the future. Find the most vital places
like lecture halls and important offices, along with the best places to eat or have a rest in between classes. It
is also recommended that you join the campus tours organised by the university staff during the zero-week.

5.2.
Once you’re familiar with your new environment, you’ll need to get yourself organised. Studying, especially
away from home, requires much more rigorous discipline than many freshmen realise. Introduce regularity
into your daily chores, so that you don’t end up having to choose between going shopping for supper or
handing in your project on time.

5.3.
However, no matter how well-organised you might be, problems of various kind might emerge. Asking your
friends for advice is fine, but don’t hesitate to consult your professors. They set up office hours for the
purpose of meeting their students and helping them if necessary. Also, get to know your academic adviser,
who will be able to give you specific tips about your course, major options or any other issues that might
come up during your studies.

5.4.
Last but not least, keep in mind that a lot of simple, everyday problems can be solved just by making sure
you know what’s happening at your university. Look out for the bulletin boards that will feature lots of ads
from other students, offering cheap accommodation or second-hand books.

Zadanie 6.
Przeczytaj trzy teksty dotyczące przestępstw. Z podanych odpowiedzi wybierz właściwą, zgodną
z treścią tekstu. Zakreśl literę A, B albo C.

Tekst 1.

My neighbourhood is slowly becoming impossible to live in. Lots of people are unemployed and the area has
become really unsafe. Every day, we hear stories about people who have been mugged or burgled, and there
have been many acts of vandalism. No wonder some of the people who have lived here their entire lives have
decided to move away. Those who have decided to stay are talking about setting up a neighbourhood watch
scheme. Actually, there is a local residents meeting this afternoon to discuss the idea. Do you think it would
be effective?
6.1. The text is about
A. a particular act of breaking the law.
B. the increasing crime rate in an area.
C. the results of some action taken by the local community.

Tekst 2.

As a traveller, you should remember that places like airports, railways and bus stations as well as major
tourist attractions are likely to be frequented by pickpockets. Many of them are extremely skillful and can
easily take advantage of the fact that your attention is focused on admiring the sights or doing more practical
things. Use your common sense to keep an eye on your wallet and expensive equipment, like cameras or
smartphones. On the bright side, violent crimes like mugging or assault are unlikely in and around most
tourist areas due to increased safety measures.
6.2. The text was written to
A. describe the techniques used by thieves.
B. list the various types of crime in tourist areas.
C. warn tourists about a particular type of crime.

Tekst 3.

Hi Adam,
You won’t believe what happened to me last night. Well, I was coming home when a group of teenagers
stopped me on the street. They were yelling horrible racist things at me. They didn’t attack me physically,
although for a while I feared it might come to that. I was really shocked. I know some of the kids involved.
For goodness’ sake, I helped one of them with his maths in my first year at university! I thought of reporting
the incident, but I want to think that maybe it was just an isolated case. But if it happens again, I might
consider moving to a different part of the city. What a horrible experience!
All the best,
Jodie
6.3. Jodie didn’t decide to report the incident to the police because she
A. didn’t think she was in real danger.
B. has already arranged to move somewhere else.
C. hopes the incident won’t happen again.

Zadanie 7.
Przeczytaj tekst. Uzupełnij zdania 7.1.–7.5. zgodnie z treścią tekstu. Luki należy uzupełnić w języku
angielskim.

On Sunday morning, we decided to leave our camping spot. We’d planned to stay till Monday, which was
a public holiday, even though we were running a bit short on food. But then, we heard the weather forecast
on the radio, which warned that violent storms were coming to that part of the mountains. So the four of us
started packing up the tents and all the other camping stuff.
The packing business didn’t go as smoothly as usual, despite the countless times we’d done it before.
Although Kyle kept rushing us, the rest of us didn’t really feel like leaving early, so the girls took a photo or
two, while I was languidly taking down the tents and rolling up the sleeping bags.
Eventually, we left. Our relaxed moods quickly changed to anxiety when we saw angry-looking clouds in the
sky and felt the first heavy raindrops. We stopped for a moment to discuss our situation. ‘Shall we look for
a dry place to wait until the rain ends?’ asked Alice. Kyle looked at the GPS device in his hand. ‘We’re not
even halfway to where we need to be. Getting soaked is one thing, but if we lose the signal, we might get
lost. I say we move on.’ We knew he was right – getting lost was a rather frightening prospect. So we walked
on, this time much faster.
An hour later, when the rain turned into a downpour and it was no longer possible to follow the slipper path,
our resolve ended. A strong wind was blowing the rain into our faces, and we could see no more than a few
metres in front of us. We needed to seek shelter from the storm. ‘There!’ Alice pointed to the left, just off
the path. We found a small opening in the rocks, barely large enough for the four of us to sit down. Yet, it
kept the rain and wind out, giving us a chance to rest and talk our options over.
Things didn’t look bright, however. It was already mid-afternoon and we had just over an hour of daylight
left to get down off the mountain. Unless the storm ended, we would be forced to stay the night there.
Understandably, none of us were looking forward to that. What was worse, the GPS device kept losing
the signal, so we faced the prospect of getting lost in the mountains.
It was Kyle who saw the flashes of torchlight among the trees. He got up and ran towards the light,
screaming his head off. A few moments later, he came back with a middle-aged man. The man introduced
himself: ‘I’m Jack Burrow. My jeep is just a 10-minute walk down there. I’ll gladly give you a lift to your
cars.’ He explained that he’d been hunting in those mountains for years and knew the area inside out. We all
got up and, with new-found motivation, we soon reached his jeep. At last, we were safe and sound.

The early symptoms were difficult to notice and it must have been quite a while before I realised that
