Experiment Title: ____________METALS_____________ Date & Time: Nov. 30, 2021

Name: _________Estañol, Jerald -________________ Date Performed: Nov. 30, 2021
Course: Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering Date Submitted: Nov. 30, 2021

OBJECTIVE:
● To know the reaction of iron, copper, zinc, and magnesium on the solution of
copper sulphate, zinc sulphate, aluminum sulphate, and silver nitrate.
● To know the arrangement of reactivity based on the results observed.

MATERIALS/ CHEMICALS:

● iron ● zinc sulphate (aq)

● zinc ● aluminum sulphate (aq)
● copper ● silver nitrate (aq)
● magnesium ● beakers
● copper sulphate (aq)

OBSERVATIONS & RESULTS:

Some metals react more easily than other metals. A reactive metal is one that readily
reacts with other elements to give up its electron, whereas less reactive metal is one that
does not lose its electron easily. The most reactive metal will react even in water while the
least reactive metal will not react even in concentrated acid. To find out the relative
reactivities of metals, we can use displacement reactions that are very common in metals.
If a metal is more reactive metal displaces, it is less reactive metal in terms of salt
solution. The arrangement of metals are from highest to lowest of reactivity series to
summarize information about reaction of metals with acid and water, single displacement
reactions and the extraction of metals from their ores. To test the reactivity of iron in the
solution of copper sulphate, zinc sulphate, and aluminum sulphate, take small pieces of
iron and put them into the different beakers containing the copper sulphate, zinc
sulphate, and aluminum sulphate solutions and leave the beakers undisturbed for one
day. After a day. The colour of copper sulphate turned light green from its original color
blue, and a reddish brown particle of copper settled at the surface of the beaker. This
indicates that iron is more reactive than copper. In the other two beakers, no reaction
occurred, this indicates that iron is less reactive than aluminum and zinc, so it cannot
displace metals from their salt solutions.

To test the reactivity of copper in solutions of silver sulphate, zinc sulphate, and
aluminum sulphate, add pieces of copper into the silver sulphate, zinc sulphate, and
aluminum sulphate solutions. After one day, the colorless silver nitrate solution turns to
blue coloured copper nitrate solution and silver particles settle down at the bottom of the
beaker. Copper is more reactive than silver so it displaces silver from silver nitrate
solution. In the other two cases, no reaction occurred because copper is less reactive than
aluminum and zinc.

To test the reactivity of zinc in the solution of copper sulphate, aluminum sulphate,
and silver nitrate, take small pieces of zinc and add them in the beakers containing these
salt solutions. After a day, we can observe that the reddish brown of copper settles down
at the bottom of copper sulphate solution. This indicates that zinc is more reactive than
copper and it displaces copper from copper sulphate solution to form zinc sulphate.

In the case of silver nitrate, zinc is more reactive than silver, it displaces silver from
silver nitrate solution and particles of the silver settle down at the surface of the beaker.
But in the case of aluminum sulphate, no change is observed, as zinc is less reactive than
aluminum. Zinc cannot displace aluminum from aluminum sulphate solution.

To test the reactivity of magnesium in the solution of copper sulphate, silver nitrate,
and zinc sulphate, add small pieces of magnesium into the beakers containing these
solutions and leave them undisturbed for one day. After a day, we can observe that
copper, zinc, and silver particles settle at the bottom of the beaker containing the
respective solutions, this indicates that magnesium is more reactive than copper, zinc, and
silver, so it displaces copper from copper sulphate solution, zinc from zinc sulphate,, and
silver from silver nitrate solution.

CONCLUSION:

From these experiments or reactions, we can infer that iron displaces copper, zinc
displaces copper, and silver and magnesium displaces zinc, copper and silver. It means
that magnesium is more reactive metal and copper is the least reactive metal.
