Exercise 7 - CREEP

EXERCISE 1
A component made of steel AISI 601 undergoes a constant tensile stress 100 MPa and it operates for 3000
hours with the following loading steps:
1- 1000 hours @ 650 °C
2- 1000 hours @ 550 °C
3- 500 hours @ 600 °C
4- 500 hours @ 580 °C.
AISI 601 steel, undergoing constant stress of 100 MPa, collapses after 1000 hours @ 700 °C and in 10000
hours @ 550 °C. Calculate the damage accumulated in the component after the described loading steps
and say whether it can resist or not.

[𝐷 = ∑"!#$ 𝐷! = 0,807 < 1]

Solution
Creep material characterization

𝑇% = 700°𝐶 = 973,15𝐾 𝑡% = 1000 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠

𝑇& = 600°𝐶 = 873,15𝐾 𝑡& = 10000 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠

Larson Miller parameters calculation: C and P

𝑃 = 𝑇(𝐶 + log 𝑡)

𝑇& log 𝑡& − 𝑇% log 𝑡%

𝐶= = 5,7315
𝑇% − 𝑇&
𝑃 = 𝑇& (𝐶 + log 𝑡& ) = 8497

𝑃 = 𝑇!' (𝐶 + log 𝑡(! )

)
" +,
𝑡(! = 10*!

Ti’ [°C] Ti’ [K] ti’ [hours] 𝑡(! [hours] 𝐷! = 𝑡𝑖’ /𝑡(!
1 650 923,15 1000 2971 0,337
2 550 823,15 1000 39004 0,026
3 600 873,15 500 10000 0,050
4 580 853,15 500 16910 0,030

Accumulated damage calculation

𝐷 = E 𝐷! = 0,442 < 1 → the component survives
