SAMPLING DISTRIBUTIONS
Full Marks : 30
AND STATISTICAL
INFERENCE - I

PLEASE READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE YOU START WRITING:

• Of the questions attempted, the answers to only the first required number of questions (as stipulated
in the question paper) will be evaluated. So please do not attempt extra questions.

• Only HAND WRITTEN answer scripts (using black or blue ink) on A4 size sheets will be
considered.
• Answer in your own words as far as practicable.
• Save the scanned pages to a single PDF file and name the document accurately i.e. Roll No_Paper
Code.PDF (example: 147_HPHCR2032T).
• Students have to write legibly their answers on A4 size sheets, scanning them and sending the entire
answer script as one PDF file to the following email address (in REPLY mode) within 30 minutes
of the completion of the examination: hstcr3052p2122@sxccal.edu
• The scanned answer scripts should have enough clarity to enable evaluation.
• On top of each page the following information should be entered by the student: Name, Roll
Number, Paper Code , Date, and Page Number
• No multiple submissions would be allowed.

The marks are given in brackets [ ] at the end of each question or part question.

The question paper consists of 2 pages.

Of the questions attempted, the answers to only the first required number of
questions (as stipulated in the question paper) will be evaluated.
So, PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT EXTRA QUESTIONS.

Attempt Question No.1 and ANY ONE out of Question No.2 and 3.
1. Consider a standard normal variate and a nonnegative real number . Carry out the
following simulation problem by repeating parts (ii)-(vi) for = 1.35 1.75.
(i) Draw a random sample of size 100 from the distribution of . Keep this fixed
throughout the study.
−
|| <
(ii) Define a random variable = . Create the realizations of based

|| >
on the sample drawn in (i). You can use “Subset Worksheet” option to carry out
this task. Describe the procedure followed in MINITAB.
(iii) Plot the histogram of . Observing the histogram, can the distribution of Y be
considered normal? Submit the histogram.
(iv) Construct a bivariate random variable (, ) by merging the realizations obtained
in (i) and (ii).
(v) Assuming normality, test at 5% level, whether the variables and are
independent.
(vi) Assuming normality, test at 5% level, whether the means of and can be
considered equal. [2+3+4+1+5+5=20]

2. Carry out part (i)-(iv) of the following simulation problem by choosing = 1.

(i) Starting from a
(0,1) distribution, generate a random sample of size 100
from ~ distribution with mean . Describe the procedure followed
in MINITAB.
(ii) Based on the realizations of (i), obtain the realizations of another random variable
= [], the greatest integer contained in .
(iii) Obtain the relative frequency distribution of the sample in (ii). Plot them using an
appropriate diagram.
(iv) In the same diagram as in (iii), also plot the theoretical probabilities of a
 ( ) and a (1 − ିఒ ) distributions. Submit the graph. Comment.
[2+1+3+4=10]

3. The birth weight of babies in a U.S. study was found to be well modelled by a
( = 3300 , = 570 ) distribution.
(i) Simulate a random sample of the birth weight of 50 babies from the above
information.
(ii) According to the study, a baby weighing less than 2500 grams is labelled a “low
birth weight”. Considering the realizations in (i) to be the actual weights of 50
randomly selected babies, test, at 5% level, whether the proportion of low birth
weights in the sample match with the finding of the study. State the hypothesis
clearly. [2+8=10]
