Human is a social animal. Homo sapiens is one of the civilized species on the earth. In world people live
in different countries with different culture, tradition, religion and ideology. These factors involve in
shaping the identity of someone. As I belong to Punjab, India. My name was given by my parent. Culture
played a vital role in our community to shape the identity. Culture in which I grew up is high context
culture which means less verbal communication and more physical expression. The people in our
community so connected and care each other.

Ideology is set of beliefs, ideas and assumptions that are accepted as common sense in any community.
Individualism is the ideology that is core value of my identity. As I mentioned above my first identity or
name is given by my parents. There are various factors of socialization that also play vital role in
moulding mu identity. Primarily, is religion, as I belong to Sikh religion makes my identity as Sikh.
Secondary, tradition culture, and social institutions. Individualism helps in our community express their
self without fear or pressure of anybody. In history or few years ago in our community for younger ones
it is not allowed to choose their life partner especially for women. Apart from that, trans gender cannot
express their self freely. However, now it is becoming easy for younger one to do whatever they want or
choose their individuality as well.

In our community individualism ideology affect the whole actions of the society. For instance, I have
freedom in my family to do whatever I want. Today I am microbiologist So, I can say that individualism is
only responsible for my identity. Before that my identity is totally dependent on others such as parents,
religion, and tradition as well. However, as we know identity is constant but changes over time.
Similarly, in our community the older ideologies put restriction on the adults. As time passed this
ideology changed and know people from Punjab especially adults follow their passion. Actions I have
taken are to pursue my study with science. And at the same time, I have taken advantage of this
ideology, as I want to come to Canada for my higher study (Biotechnology).

As a student I promote this notion that everyone has right to do whatever they want, what ever they
want to be. Actions that I have taken are fare and I think correct. In the future I will also give freedom to
my children. So, they can grow in environment which is totally favourable for them.
