Dell’Arte International

The initial shows were in San Francisco which is where Carlo Mazzone-
Clementi and Jane Hill founded it in 1971, with the goal of bringing the
European heritage of physical training to America and developing actor-
creators through instruction in mime, mask, movement, and ensemble
creation.
The focus of DAI is physical awareness, play, movement, and a variety of global
dance forms. It also includes the exploration of theatre dynamics, character
and relationship, and the actor and the space.
They use their bodies as an instrument of transformation
School Director: “Our founders, Carlo Mazzone-Clementi, and Jane Hill came
up here from Berkeley, CA in the early 70s to look for a place where actors
could focus on their training and the development of work. Apart from the
rush and rat race of society, Humboldt County offered an immersion in nature.
We study the dynamics of nature, natural forms, animals, elements as teachers
of the embodiment of human emotions, human conditions. For the actor, this
represents a physical, deeply experiential way to enter the work of creating
characters, creating stories and worlds.”
Student 1: “First of all is very different from anything I've ever done in my
school career as a student of any kind and as an actress/ performer/ dancer”
Student 2: “Training at DAI is very different. When people talk of, like oh we
are a physical theatre company or were a physical theatre school, they
discourage the use of the voice, the text and speaking onstage. But the training
at DAI is actually a marriage of embodied athletic voice and body of the actor.”
