B Set shortly after the end of the Second W orld W ar in the m id-1940s, The Shawshank Redemption tells the
fictional story of Andy Dufresne, a young and successful banker w ho is convicted of the murder of his w ife and her
lover. Based in the state of Portland, M aine, one of nineteen American states w ithout the death penalty, Andy is
instead sentenced to life imprisonm ent in Shawshank Prison. Over the next tw enty years, Andy, played by actor
Tim Robbins, learns to adapt to life in prison w ith the help of his friend Ellis 'Red' Redding, an older convict played
by Hollywood favourite Morgan Freeman. It w ould ruin the film to give away too many further details of the story
here. However, it w o n ’t spoil it to say that the plot shows the pow er of hope, courage and determination, even in
situations that at times seem incredibly cruel and hopeless.
C The Shawshank Redemption was filmed in the early nineties, and to prepare
for his starring role, Tim Robbins spent tim e locked up alone in a real prison
cell. Now, more than 20 years later, Robbins is back in prison. Thankfully, he is
not there as an inmate this tim e, but as a teacher w ho gives acting lessons to
prisoners in a m edium-security jail in California. The project has been running
for several years w ith the help of a theatre com pany* called ‘The Actor’s Gang,’
which was started by Robbins in the 1980s. In an interview with CBS News,
Robbins explained that the opportunity to act provides prisoners with a break
from prison routine and a chance to explore new emotions and realities. W hen
he was asked w hether prisons should be offering such enjoyable activities to
inmates w ho have been found guilty of serious crimes, Robbins replied that the
acting classes w ere not about having a good tim e but w ere actually hard w ork
which was physically tough and required* a high level of discipline, com m itm ent*
and courage. He also said that none of the prisoners w ho completed the
program m e had reoffended and returned to prison after they w ere released.

more fathers are looking after their children at home nowadays, the
physical bond between a father and child can never be as close as

girls see this as a role that they themselves will have one day.
