PROBLEM STATEMENT
DISCUSSION ON ATB-FIRE
WATER PUMP DIAGNOSTIC
USING MODAL OR ODS
INTRODUCTION
 To perform Operating Deflection Shape-Acquiring
during normal Operating speed and load-ONLINE
CONDITION.
 Carry out Modal and FRF on the individual Fire water
Pump train-Measurements were taken during
OFFLINE/STATIC CONDITION.
 The frequent failures, low availability &
reliability of Fire water pumps for all the 3 units,
Diesel engine-driven and since commissioning of
the pump had initiated this investigation work
 The objective of investigation is to identify the
root cause of the frequent failures and to
provide recommendation to the above problem
The study to determine the response of
System Analysis the whole structure during operation is
termed as Operating Deflection Shape
(ODS)analysis

One measurement technique to determine

the dynamic characteristics is called
Frequency Response Function (FRF) Modal
analysis.

The Response of a system is the interaction between the Dynamic

characteristics H(ω) and the Excitation of the system
Response = H(ω) . Ex citation

For comprehensiveness,
and the R espons e one has to measure the
Dynam ic Characteristics and then work
H(ω) w hich is not backward to evaluate
constant the Ex citation
In most cases, analysis of dynamic system only involves the measurement of
Response and directly relating it to Excitation
There are no sensors able to locate and measure these Excitation forces and H(ω) is
assumed constant.
TOOLS OF TRADE & SOW
 Utilizing the latest & the fastest real time multichannel
analyzers from the leading brand OROS. Depending on the
number of channels we can use starting from 4 ,8 , 16 ,
upto 32 channels of real time measurement.
 High Dynamic range & frequency range ( real time upto 20
Khz ) make them the ideal choice for Modal analysis.
TOOLS OF TRADE FOR ODS/MODAL
• NIDAQ/OROS36 –Multi Channel (16-32 channels)

• ADASH V4PRO machinery analyzer. ( Multi- Channel )

• 4-Triaxial accelerometer & 1- single axis accelerometer

with magnetic base & related cables

• Inertia Block-Keyphasor c/w Tachometer

• Pdm Software.

• Related cables.
The vibration measuring instruments & transducers have valid
calibration traceable to NIST standards.

CRANE STRUCTURAL MEASUREMENTS

 The 30meters crane / dredger boom had developed

cracks .
 Nine channel vibration measurement & four channel
dynamic strain measurements was done on real time
analyser.
 Spectrums, ODS , peak displacements & stress in
different operation conditions was calculated in the
post analysis.

VIRTUAL PROTOTYPING

Virtual prototyping is the process of using a

virtual prototype, in lieu of a physical
prototype, for test and evaluation of specific
characteristics of a product design.
FEA MODAL ANALYSIS
Finite Element Modal Analysis
is a process of determining the dynamic
characteristics of a given structure by
computational mechanics, i.e. Natural
Frequencies and
Mode Shapes

However……

Unlike FRF method, modal damping

cannot be obtained using FEA
BASIC COMPUTATIONAL STEPS IN FEA
•Create and discretize the solution
domain into finite elements

•Assume a shape function to represent the

physical behaviour of an element

•Develop matrix equation for an element

{[K ] − ω 2
[M ]}[u] = 0
•Assemble the element to represent the
entire problem

•Apply material properties, boundary

conditions, initial conditions and loading

•Sent the global matrix to the solver to

solve for all unknowns.

•Generate mode shapes and natural

frequencies
