1. What specific passive solar building orientation practices can earn LEED credit?
Passive solar building orientation practices that can earn an LEED credit are to increase
the south-facing glaze area to at least 50% the sum of both the east and west facing glaze area.
Next, position the east-west axis of the building to at least 15 degrees due to the east-west.
Finally, cover at least 90% of the south-facing gaze area at solar noon throughout a summer
solstice and uncovered at least 90% throughout a winter solstice.
2. What types of sensitive lands should be avoided when choosing a site location, to obtain
maximum LEED credit?
Sensitive lands that should be avoided when choosing a site location in order to obtain
maximum LEED credits are prime farmland defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in
the United States Code of Federal Regulations, Title 7, Volume 6, Parts 400 to 699, Section
657.5. Another site location that should be avoided are undeveloped land that's within 50 ft of a
water body like a river, lake, stream, or sea and sustain aquatic life, recreation, or industrial
usage. This is because of the Clean Water act which preserves the nation’s waters, keeps it
optimal for sea life and swimming and free of pollutants.
3. What basic landscape/site design practices can be followed to obtain LEED credits?
Consider both Sustainable Sites and Water Efficiency credits.
Basic landscape/site design practices that can be followed to obtain LEED credits are
utilizing temporary irrigation systems for plant establishments (allowed if removed within one
year of insulation). Next, reduce potable water consumption by 50% from the calculated mid-
summer baseline. Then, replace potentially wasted water consumption for non-potable activities
like flushing a toilet with rainwater, recycled wastewater, recycled greywater, or water treated
transported by a public agency. Not only does it save potable water but reduce potential
contamination of water bodies like rivers or lakes essential to an ecosystem.
4. What types of fixtures should be specified for single family homes to gain LEED credit
for efficient indoor water use?
Fixtures that can be specified for single family homes to gain LEED credit for efficient
indoor water use is a reduction to indoor water usage by 20% from baseline. Then, have all
newly installed toilets, urinals, private lavatory faucets, and showerheads eligible for a
WaterSense label or a local equivalent for projects foreign to the U.S.

5. What characteristics of windows, skylights, and doors affect the number of LEED credits
obtained for energy efficiency?
Characteristics of windows, skylights, and doors that affect the number of LEED credits
obtained for energy efficiency are it’s U-factor and WFA (window-to-floor-area) ratio. To
determine the WFA ratio, calculate the total window area in the above-grade conditioned floor
area. The WFA process works for skylight windows as well. Once determine, if the WFA ratio
15% or more in climate zones of 4-8, it must meet a stringent U-factor requirements. If the WFA
ratio is 15% or more in climate zones of 1-3, it must meet stringent solar heat gain coefficient

requirements.
6. What types of high-efficiency appliances should be specified for single family homes to
earn LEED credit for energy efficiency?
High-efficiency appliances that can earn LEED credits for single family homes are
ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerator(s) which grants 1 point. Next, a ENERGY STAR
qualified ceiling fan placed in the living or family room, and every bedroom which earns
0.5 points. Lastly, a ENERGY STAR qualified dishwasher(s) that grants the home 0.5
points.
7. At what spacing should wall studs, joists, and rafters be placed to earn LEED credit for
energy efficiency? Why would spacing of these components affect energy efficiency?
The spacing wall studs, joists, and rafter should be placed greater 16 inches to earn a
LEED credit of 0.5 for energy efficiency. Spacing of these components affect energy
efficiency because it affects the R-value which determines the resistance to the flow of
heat with a numerical value. The higher the R-value of a wall stud, joist, or rafter the
lower the U-factor which means the heat gain/loss is smaller in comparison to the R-
value of a wall stud, joist, or rafter. However, other factors are include to determine heat
gain/loss like area and change in temperature between the interior and exterior of the
building.

8. What is the baseline waste allowance for a two-bedroom home? What volume of concrete
does this represent? What volume of tree limbs and stumps does this represent? Note that
a typical residential construction dumpster (8' x 3.5' x 20') can hold 20 cubic yards of
waste material. You may use the LEED v4 Homes BD+C Reference Guide at:
http://www.usgbc.org/node/2613092
The baseline waste allowance for a two-bedroom home is 6,720 lbs which is equivalent
to 3.62 cubic yards of concrete and 6.22 cubic yards of tree limbs and stumps.
9. How many LEED points are possible in the Indoor Environmental Quality category for
each of the following situations:
a. A garage is not constructed
2 points
b. A fireplace is not installed
2 points
c. A shoe removal and storage space is near the primary entryway, separated from
living areas without conventional carpet
1 point
d. At least 90% of the site-applied paints and coatings, flooring, insulation, and site-
applied adhesives and sealants have been tested and meet the requirements of CA
Section 01350
3 points
10. From a public relations perspective, why might a company want to have a high LEED
score?
From a public relations perspective, a company would target to have a high LEED score
because it places a positive reputation on the company. By having a positive reputation, it helps
in establishing connections with other company to help the company grow and collect more
profit.
