CHAPTER 1: PROJECT BACKGROUND
Supermarkets are one of the most convenient ways to buy goods. This type of establishment became a one stop
shop for the community because of the different varieties of goods it can store for different occasions. These kinds of
stores have different sections where they store each of the goods to keep them fresh. So for them to keep their
products fresh, it will require a steady supply of electricity because they will use different kinds of equipment like the
chiller for frozen products and beverages, and air-conditioning for the customers convenience while roaming the
store. The client plans to build a supermarket in areas where products are limited to people, subsequently to boost
"Design of a Metro Supermarket with 500kVA Indoor Substation in Poblacion, Alangalang, Leyte" is the title of
this design project. The electrical distribution system design will be exclusively based on the client's requirements, as
well as the application of appropriate standards and codes in accordance with Philippine Electrical Code (PEC). The
electrical system must be designed cheaply for continuous and reliable services, people and equipment safety, ease
of maintenance and operation, minimal power losses, mechanical protection of equipment, interchangeability of
hardware, and load augmentation. The design team must communicate the engineering studies and computations in
order to meet the above goals and attain the desired results. The goal of this design is to provide the client a reliable
system that can sustain the needs of the supermarket based on codes and standards. Therefore, the design project
team will provide a calculation of different configurations that can be used for the power system of an industrial
facility, such as Metro supermarket. The design also covers a substation where it can sustain the electrical load for

● The general objective of the team is to design a 500 kVA substation for the Metro supermarket in Poblacion,
Alangalang, Leyte. The team should include its substation in accordance with the client's requirements, local
and international codes and standards, and multiple realistic constraints such as economic, environmental,
sustainability, safety, and risk, as well as public health, social, cultural, welfare, and global considerations.
Supermarkets are large retail stores operated on a self-service basis, selling groceries, fresh produce, meat,
bakery and dairy products, and sometimes an assortment of nonfood goods. Since supermarkets are an
important industry to the community, the need for electrical supply is a must, therefore demanding a

In all electrical system designs, preliminary load calculation is critical since it affects the system's preliminary
estimated load calculation and design. Due to the word preliminary, not all loads may be included in the calculation, and
final load calculations may be revised. A preliminary load calculation will substantially aid in the final load calculation and
schedule creation. Once the actual load schedule is completed, the estimated load may change.
Different loads, such as ventilating fans, fan coil units, split type fan units, fuel pumps, and other mechanical
equipment, can be discovered for preliminary load calculations of the store. The industry partner provided the rating in KW
and HP of the mechanical equipment when determining the load. According to the statistics, most mechanical equipment
uses 230 V as the supply voltage to achieve the VA rating.
In order to establish the overall capacity of the electrical system, the calculation and estimation of loads must be
done correctly in this project. The calculated loads will be used to size transformers and other components that will ensure
that the electrical system operates safely and reliably. We can determine the load using this formula:
The design team adopts the method through some researched documents and old projects relating to the
construction of a facility. The load estimate is done per panel, with wires and cables as well as conduits sized up. Because
of its precision and good allowance for each system in case the customer wishes to add loads to the power system, the
said method is favored by both the design team and the industry partner.
The normal load estimate for mechanical loads for Metro Supermarket will be based on the PEC table 4.30.14.2
Single Phase Motor Full Load Current and PEC 4.30.14.4 Three Phase Motor Full Load Current.
The general lighting load estimation for Metro Supermarket will be based on the table below. The total area of the
rooms is based on the summary of rooms indicated in chapter 2. According to the table 2.20.2.3 of the PEC 2017, the
general lighting loads by occupancy for stores is 24 VA per square meter.

Lighting is the most important element when designing spaces especially spaces meant for housing. It does not only
provide better vision but also sets the mood of the once living in the area. While power is just as important especially on
electrical system design because it is the reason why electrical system designs are made: to provide power. The images
below show the lighting and power layout preliminary design for the proposed project.
