Grade Level: Grade 8

Title: I am an African Child

Grade Level Standard: The learner demonstrates communicative competence through his/her
understanding of Afro-Asian Literature and other text types for a deeper appreciation of
Philippine Culture and those of other countries.

Description of the Selection:


The poem was written by Eku McGred using a first person point of view. "I am an African Child"
conveys the meaning of pride and identity that an African youth must possess. It identifies the
struggles and discrimination across history that their race have encountered. In addition, it also
embodies the aesthetic value of being an african child. Hence, it instills to readers the
importance of equality because there will always be beauty to every person. Furthermore, the
poem also intensifies the right of an african child to be seen as human regardless of their skin
color and history. Finally, the poem will enable readers to truly understand and appreciate the
development of literature and culture of Africa over time.

Title: I Have A Dream

Grade Level Standard: The learner demonstrates communicative competence through his/her
understanding of British-American Literature, including Philippine Literature and other text types
foe a deeper appreciation of Philippine culture and those of other countries.

Description of the Selection: The text "I Have A Dream" was written by Martin Luther King Jr.
The selection was a speech created by King in order to convey an important message to every
American regardless of the texture and color of their skin. In the speech, he repeatedly gives
emphasis on specific American history which he believed was the root of their identity. Hence,
those that happened in the past must be left in the past and they must start to unite together,
black and white Americans in building their dreams in their land. It was also stated in the speech
how King encouraged the American people to create a nation that sees equality in all aspects.
Moreover, King was trying to inculcate to his audience the hope for a society in which skin color
will not be the basis of their value but rather someone's inner characteristics. Therefore, the text
embodies the history, identity, and dream of Martin Luther King Jr. to every American person.
