FINAL PROJECT: RESEARCH PAPER

The Negative Impact of Korean Drama on Teenagers

Abstract
This research is motivated by the existence of teenagers who are addicted to watching Korean
dramas (K-dramas). This negative impact shows us that K-dramas are not only interested but
there is an impact if you can't control yourself. The purpose of this research is to explain that k-
drama addiction will have an impact on the personality, unreal expectations, and quality of
sleeping and learning of teenagers. The results of this study indicate those adolescent girls who
prefer K-dramas, and also show that the impact of K-drama addiction can occur due to a lack of
self-control and parental supervision.

Keywords: K-drama, Addiction, Teenagers

Introductory Paragraph

Korean drama (K-dramas) is a television drama created in South Korea. K-dramas are widely
popular in various circles around the world. This show usually has several episodes each drama.
As currently, many teenagers in any country are interested in South Korean television drama
series. An example is in Indonesia, many teenagers forget about the time for watching Korean
dramas. Chances are they will forget to eat, lazy to study, or affect personalities. When having
free time, anyone will always look for useful activities, as well as teenagers who choose to watch
K-dramas. Because this era of technology is more advanced they can access it online freely. Not
enough with streaming, they can also share with friends. The appeal of K-dramas is quite strong

because it has a storyline with various interesting genres. But if they do not limit themselves in
watching, K-dramas have a negative impact on teenagers resulting in addiction.

Theoretical Background

We know that K-dramas are interesting, not appreciated because of their physical appearance,
storyline, or genre but also because K-drama series are shorter than Indonesian dramas. That's
why the study is anchored on the negative effect of K-drama by Alimudin (2019: 6) The negative
impact of watching K-dramas is in the form of no sense of time, lack of socializing, getting too
carried away, and leaving real activities. These are all very likely to happen because the less self-
consciousness, parent supervision, and the worse is addiction. Moreover, K-dramas are very
popular in all circles. That is most likely to happen to teenagers because the effect of liking K-
drama has an impact on personality or emotional effects. In other topics by Indrawan (2020:8),
with self-awareness in reducing watching K-dramas, the adverse effect caused by K-drama will
certainly decrease and over time will fade. Likewise, reducing watching K-dramas can avoid
addiction also it will be better for managing time. Especially in learning, because many teenagers
are lazy to study due to enjoying watching Korean dramas too much. Adita et al., (2018) state
that one of the effects of individuals who are addicted to K-drama is consumerism which can
ignore social and environmental relations.

Many negative possibilities result from being addicted to K-dramas. Everything that is explained
by experts is true and indeed often occurs in teenagers. The author's view on the bad effects of
addiction can impact the quality of sleep and learn for a teenager who is a student. Feeling lazy,
having too high expectations, and personality can also be impacted.

Discussion

Addiction is a chronic, treatable medical disease that involves complex interactions between
brain circuits, genetics, environment, and individual life experiences (Rockville Pike). Addiction
is not as long as negatives. Some addictions are positive. However, in this explanation addiction
is a worse thing that can cause a negative impact, namely addiction to watching K-drama for a
teenager who incidentally is a student. They have a feeling of lack or dissatisfaction before they

finish the episode they watch. The reason is that they like and enjoy the storyline too much, so
they keep watching without thinking about the impact that will happen later. Research by Adita
et al., (2018) states that one of the effects of individuals who are addicted to K-drama is
consumerism which can ignore social and environmental relations. Symptoms found in this
research are updating information about K-dramas, spending time off watching K-dramas on
laptops, and getting ridiculed by other students who don't like K-dramas. Because teenagers who
don't like Korean dramas tend to think that K-drama addicts don't like socializing and are lazy to
do activities.

K-dramas fans are usually women and they have unreal expectations for a boy in their life. This
is in line with Islamiyati's research (2017) that women prefer K-dramas because they see male
figures displayed in K-dramas from a physical perspective such as being handsome, tall, and
athletic as well as being faithful and caring. Because those who are addicted to K-dramas see
how high the quality of the cast is considered to be the standard type of partner in their life. The
teenage girls imagine having a partner like the actors in the drama and they expect the perfect
man to be their partner in the future. In fact, the man they imagined was not real.

The impact of K-dramas addiction also on the quality of sleep and learning. When teenagers are
addicted to K-dramas they will spend their time in front of the laptop without looking around.
They are willing to stay up just for the marathon to finish the episode. Worse all day does not get
out of the place where they feel comfortable. They will make things easier for them to do, such
as making the assignments, eating, etc. Due to poor sleep quality, they don't have a good time to
study either. When the quality of sleep is poor, it will be an impact on health, and when health is
weak, it will have an impact on the quality of learning. Until the end at their value (Malfasari. E.
2019).

Conclusion

Based on the results of the research, Korean dramas have a negative impact on adolescents,
resulting in addiction, so the authors conclude that if something is addictive in a negative sense,
more precisely, it is not useful at all. But it will always have a bad impact on yourself. K-drama

is interesting, but if it's too much, it's called addiction. What must be done to avoid it, those who
are still teenagers must manage time, limit themselves, and here also the role of parents is needed
to supervise their children.
