Daniel: A Believer in Babylon Lesson Summary: Daniel is a great story of Gods activity in personal lives lived on the world

stage. It is a story that illuminates some of the features in our early 21st Century world. Daniel can be seen as a series of personal faith stories set within a global context, where kings, kingdoms and religious views are in conflict. We live in a time when intolerance can become a substitute for Grace and costly discipleship. Daniel and his story gives us an important opportunity to examine what results when Christians exhibit faithful and costly discipleship and what God desires from those who follow in Gods ways without resorting to violence or coercion. Through the workshops of this unit, children are given experiential evidence of Gods faithfulness to them as believers. Even in times of trouble, God is at work strengthening the faith of believers to overcome the world and its troubles. Christian kids are facing more and more situations today where they may need to defend their faith. That is why this story gives such an excellent example of those who needed to stand by their faith over 2,600 years ago! A faith response means serving God no matter what the consequence whether God rescues them or not. These are the truths we will build upon as we teach your child and as we work together with you to raise a Godly generation.

Bible Memory Verse:

David Ford, Minister to Children

Dont be like people of this world, but let God change the way you think. Then you will know how to do everything that is good and pleasing to God.Romans 12:2

Lesson Summary:
As children engage in a scriptless drama, they learn that Daniel was not alone in the lions den. They learn how Daniel survived the lions in his daily life through steadfast prayer and trust in God. Children learn that they, too, can calm the lions in their lives through receiving Gods peace that is beyond understanding.

Lesson Summary:
Whew, it was hot in that furnace! Children will hear the story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and learn how they stood up for God. Through a computer game (or adaptation) children will practice facing present-day fiery furnaces and make choices keeping their faith in mind. Children will learn that although standing up for God may make a situation more difficult, God blesses those who face persecution.

Lesson Summary:
Before children learn the story of Daniel and the Food Test, they participate in their own food challenge deciding between health and unhealthy food. Through Daniels story they learn how Daniel stuck to his beliefs in the midst of a foreign culture pressuring him to live in the kings way. Although fictional, the story If I Only Had a Green Nose by Max Lucado relates to the pressures children face in their lives. The Bible memory verse reminds them how they can be strong and withstand the pressures around the

Lesson Summary: Children learn that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego lived in a foreign land with daily pressures to live in the kings way and not Gods way. Disobeying the king meant that they would be thrown into the fiery furnace; yet they did not cave in and remained steadfast in their beliefs. As children see a science experiment demonstrated whereby a cup filled with water does not burn, they are asked to think about Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and what they were filled with that kept them from burning. Children identify pressures in their lives that challenge their Christian beliefs. An air pressure science experiment helps them visually see how they can release the bad pressures and rely on Gods Word and faithfulness.

Lesson Summary: Children view the movie of Daniels story. The movie captures the highlights of Daniel and his three friend: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Children learn of the faithfulness of the four friends as they live in captivity in Babylon. They learn that God had a bigger plan and worked through the willingness of Daniel and his friends to faithfully live in Gods way. Children complete a Faithful Living Chart and learn that God blesses them when they choose to live in Gods way.

After children learn of Daniels daily spiritual practices, they experience a simple labyrinth-like Spiritual Walk. Walking quietly to each Spiritual Station, children work their way towards the CENTER where a table is set to evoke their senses to the Fullness of God and knowing the Trinity. As they walk out of the CENTER towards the ordinary world, they bring the sacred with them as they are blessed for their journey outwards.
