Harmonic dictation tools.

1. sing bassline, transcribe


2. Identify chord quality : major, minor, dominant, diminished, etc
3. sing each chord (stacked, as if you were doing an arpeggiation)
4. for each chord, identify it's "shape" and inversion

5. Once you know it's inversion, you can identify the root. Once you know the root, you can
identify it's function.
1. If it's a diatonic dominant chord (i.e. the V,) you are done! Be sure to include the
inversion.
2. If it's a secondary dominant, then the root of the secondary dominant is a perfect fourth
lower than the chord it “prepares.”
1. V/V : starts on “re” (fourth lower than sol)
2. you can also think scale degrees.
