EXPRESSIONS

Numerical expression – consists of numbers and operations.


Example: 5-3, 7+2
A variable – A letter used to represent one or more numbers (x, y, n, p)
A variable expression consists of numbers, variables and operations.
Example: 6 + d, 8f, y-8
To evaluate a variable expression, substitute a number for each variable and
evaluate the resulting number expression.
Example 6 + d, when d = 3
A verbal model – Describes a problem using words as labels and using math
symbols to relate the words.
Example: three fewer than a number
