NOBODY WANTS YOU WHEN YOU’RE DOWN AND OUT – ANALIZA

Once I lived the life of a millionaire, spendin' my money I didn't have a care
I carried my friends out for a good time, buying bootleg liquor, champagne and
wine
When I begin to fall so low, I didn't have a friend and no place to go
So if I ever get my hand on a dollar again, I'm gonna hold on to it 'til them eagles
grin
Nobody knows you, when you down and out
In my pocket not one penny, and my friends I haven't any

The song is a moderate-tempo blues with ragtime-influences, which follows an

eight-bar progression:

I – III7 VI7 ii – VI7 ii IV7 – ♯ivo7 I – VI7 II7 V7

C – E7 A7 Dm – A7 Dm F7 – F#º7 C – A7 D7 G7

I – Tonic chord

ii – Supertonic - predominant chord, a chord that naturally resolves to chord with

dominant function. The supertonic chord lies a fifth above the V chord.
Descending fifths are a strong basis for harmonic motion (see circle of fifths). The
supertonic is one of the strongest predominants and approaches the V chord
from above by descending fifth.

IV7 – Subdominant - the tonic is the dominant of the subdominant.

#ivº7 – Every diminished chord is a 7th chord with a flatted 9 in four different
ways. For example, the diminished chord with the notes D♭-E-G-B♭ is,
simultaneously, a C7-9, an E♭7-9, an F♯7-9, and an A7-9.

II7 – Secondary dominant:

II7 = V7/V
VI7 = V7/ii = V7/V/V
III7 = V7/vi = V7/V/V/V
♯ivo7 = viio7/V
