4.0 Design of Steel Structures

5.0 Design of Truss

6.0 Design of Canopy

1.0 General

This specification is intended to cover general as well as technical

specification required for design of Structural work required for OTS and
Canopy to the Owner.

2.0 Codes and Standards

Following is a general listing of Codes and Standards to be used in the design

National Building Code of India.

IS-875 : Code of practice for Structural safety of buildings
- loading standards.
IS-800 : Code of practice for general construction in steel.

3.0 Strucutal Materials

Structural steel shall conform to Grade B of IS: 2062 for rolled steel
members or plates up to 20 mm thickness.
Structural hollow sections (square & rectangular) conforming to IS:4923.
All structural steel plates and sections shall be of Main producer such as
“SAIL” or “TATA STEEL” or “RINL” or “JINDAL” make or vendor approved
by owner.

4.0 Design of Steel Structures

4.1 Loads :

All structures thereof shall conform to the latest revision of relevant Indian
Standard specifications and also to the various other technical
requirements. The structures shall be designed for most critical
combinations of dead load, live load, wind loads and seismic loads, as
applicable as per requirement of relevant codes and standard.

A. Dead Load
(IS 875 part-1: 1987)
Dead load includes self weight of all the structural and achitectural
components. The following unit weight of material shall be considered for
computation of loads.

Materials Unit Weight

Metal Roof Sheet 0.1 kN/m²

B. Live Load
(IS 875 part-2: 1987)
As per IS 875, part-2 the live loads on inaccessible roof is 0.75kN/m² and
0.02kN/m² to be reduced for every degree increase in slope over 10°.

C. Wind Load
(IS 875 part-3:g2015)
(Part 3):2015 for a basic wind speed of 47 m/s upto a height of 10 metres
above mean ground level.Terrain Category-2, shall be considered for all
structures.

D. Seismic Load
(IS 1893 part-1: 2016)
The site falls in Zone-III as identified in the map in IS:1893-2016. Analysis
and design of structures to resist the seismic forces will be established in
accordance with the recommendations of IS: 1893. Importance factor of
1.0 , response reduction factor of 3.0 and soft soil strata is considered for
the design.

4.2 Load Combination :

The following load combination are considred for design.

DL+LL
DL+LL+WL/EQ
DL+WL/EQ

Where the above loads are :

DL = Dead load of structures, floors, walls etc.
LL = General live load on floors.
WL = Wind Load.
EQ = Earthquake Load.

Appropriate load combination shall be as per IS 800: 2007 Table-4

considred for design.

4.3 Design Concept :

Analytical model of the building structure will be a three dimensional

space frame. Analysis of models shall be done using STAAD Pro
Software.
The Strength design of Steel members will be done by Limite State
method using IS:800 (2007)
DESIGN OF TRUSS
1.0 Load Calculation :

a. Dead Load of roof sheet = 0.1 kN/m²

Udl applied on Staad members:

Span UDL
m kN/m
0.845 0.085
0.5875 0.059
0.165 0.017

b. Live Load on roof sheet (24° slope) = 0.21 kN/m²

Udl applied on Staad members:

Span UDL
m kN/m
0.845 0.177
0.5875 0.123
0.165 0.035

c. Wind Load on roof sheet (24° slope) (IS 875 part-3: 2015)

Basic wind speed, Vb = 47 m/s

Risk Coefficient, k1 (Cl:6.3.1) = 1
Elevation level, z = 30m
Height factor, k2 (Cl:6.3.2) 1.17
Topography factor, k3 (Cl:6.3.3) = 1
Importance factor for cyclonic region, k4 (Cl:6.3 = 1
Wind direction factor, Kd (Cl:7.2.1) = 0.9
Area average factor, Ka (Cl:7.2.2) = 1
Combination factor, Kc (Cl:7.3.3.13) = 1
Design Wind pressure, pd (Cl:7.2) = 1.634 kN/m²

height, h = 1.256
width, w = 1.5
h/w = 0.84

Cp Windwar Leeward
Wind-X -0.5 -0.5 (Force Coeff Ref : Table: 6)
Wind-Z -0.8 -0.8 (Force Coeff for worst cond. Is considered)
Wind-X Windwar Leeward Wind-Z Windwar Leeward
0.85 -0.690 -0.690 0.85 -1.105 -1.105
0.59 -0.480 -0.480 0.59 -0.768 -0.768
0.17 -0.135 -0.135 0.17 -0.216 -0.216

The above loads are applied as udl on the roof purlins.

d. Seismic Load (IS 1893 part-1: 2016)

Since the weight of the structure when compared to suporting building is

less than 5%, so the seismic analysis has been ignored (ref Cl: 6.1.7
(b.2)).
But the weight of the structure to be considred while designing of
supporting structures.
