ASSIGNMENT 5

SITUATION:

List some factors that influence whether a rock will deform:

1. in an elastic manner,
2. in a plastic manner,
3. or break when placed under stress

Rock will deform: in an elastic manner.

● When steadily applied force, rocks first respond by deforming elastically.

● When the force is released, the rock, like an elastic band, will resume to
almost its previous shape and size.
● Temperature, confining pressure, rock type, and time are all elements that
impact a rock's strength and deformation.

Rock will deform: in a plastic manner.

● The material tends to fracture at high strain rates. As there is more chance for
individual atoms to move at low strain rates, ductile action is preferred.
● If rocks deform in a plastic way, rather than breaking to produce faults or
splits, they may be bent or folded, and the resulting formations are known as
folds.
● Folds are caused by compressional or tensile pressures operating over a long
period of time. Due to the obvious low strain rate and/or high temperature,
rocks that we ordinarily deem elastic might act in a plastic fashion, resulting in
such folds.

Deformation when placed under stress.

● They start deforming, generally by bending, flowing, or fracturing.

● The rate of strain application, as well as the temperature of the rock body and
the water content.
● The way a rock responds to stress depends on its composition and structure.
