Directions: Solve the following problems systematically by group. Box your final
answer and express it in accordance with the rules of significant figures. HANDWRITE
your solutions and answers on 1 whole yellow pad.

b. If 0.5 M HCl is used to produce the PbCl2, how many liters of HCI solution is needed
to produce 5.00 g of PbCl2?
2. Table sugar undergoes combustion through the chemical reaction (MM: C = 12.01
g/mol, H = 1.008 g/mol, O = 16 g/mol):

C12H22O11(s) + O2(g) → CO2(g) + H2O(g)

C12H22O11 + 12O2 → 12CO2 + 11H2O

a. If the reaction produces 0.755 mol of H2O, how many grams of C12H22O11 is used in
the reaction?
Moles Chem A → Moles Chem B → Grams
1 342.296
O.755 mol H2O ✕ 11
✕ 1
= 23.49 g
b. Based on the mass of C12H22O11 obtained in Part A, what is the volume (in mL) of CO2
produced (assuming that it is measured at STP)?
Grams → Moles Chem A → Moles Chem B → Liters
1 12 22.49
23.49 ✕ 342.296
✕ 1
✕ 1
= 18.45 L
= 18450 mL

3. Iron (III) nitrate is produced from the given reaction (MM: Fe = 55.85 g/mol, O = 16
g/mol, N = 14.01 g/mol):

Fe2O3(s) + HNO3(aq) → Fe(NO3)3(aq) + H2O(l)

a. If both reactants have a mass of 15.50 g, which is the limiting reagent? Which is the
excess reagent?
b. How many grams of Fe(NO3)3 is produced in the reaction?

c. How much (in grams) of the excess reagent is left at the end of the reaction?

4. 0.375 mol of Chromium is used to produce Chromium (III) sulfide, through the
reaction (MM: Cr = 52.00 g/mol, S = 32.07 g/mol):

Cr(s) + S8(s) → Cr2S3(s)

a. How many grams of Cr2S3 will be produced theoretically in the reaction?
b. After implementing the reaction through conducting an experiment, 95.2% of the
theoretical Cr2S3 is produced. How many grams of Cr2S3 are produced from the actual
experiment?
c. What is the percent error of the experiment?

5. When potassium cyanide (KCN) reacts with acids, a deadly poisonous gas, hydrogen
cyanide (HCN), is given off (K= 39.098 g/mol, C = 12.01 g/mol, N = 14.01 g/mol, Cl =
35.45 g/mol, H = 1.008 g/mol). Here is the chemical equation:

KCN(aq) + HCl(aq) → KCl(aq) + HCN(g)

a. If a sample of 0.3070 g of KCN is added to an excess of 5.50 ml of 3.00 M HCI, which

is the limiting reactant? excess reagent?
b. How many particles of KCl are produced in this reaction?

c. How many many millimoles of the excess reagent are left at the end of the reaction?

6. Nitroglycerin (C3H5N3O9) is a powerful explosive. Its decomposition may be

represented by the chemical equation below (MM: C = 12.01 g/mol, H = 1.008 g/mol, N
= 14.01 g/mol, O = 16 g/mol). This reaction generates a large amount of heat and many
gaseous products.
C3H5N3O9 → N2(g) + CO2(g) + H2O(g) + O2(g)

Balanced Equation: 4C3H5N3O9 → 6N2(g) + 12CO2(g) + 10H2O(g) + O2(g)
