CPE TIPS

GENERAL TIPS:

Two parts:
1. The compulsory Part is an ESSAY (250-280 words)
2. The second Part can either be a LETTER, an ESSAY, a REPORT, a REVIEW or an
ARTICLE. (280-320 words)

The Writing part of the CPE lasts 90’ minutes (approximately 45’ for each composition)

Part 1. Compulsory ESSAY:


Summarize and Give your Opinion on two short texts

PREPARATION
STEP 1: READ BOTH TEXTS

Read TEXT 1 carefully and underline the two (2) key points (points 1&2)
Read TEXT 2 carefully and underline the two (2) key points. (points 3&4)

STEP 2: NOW THINK:

 Are the points of text 1 contrasting to the points of text 2? If yes, you have to
make a contrast between the two texts
 Are the points of text 1 complementary to the points of text 2? If yes, you
have to discuss the two texts.

STEP 3: START WRITING USING THE FOLLOWING LAYOUT

Introduction. Make a general statement paraphrasing the instructions. Introduce the readers to
the question you are going to discuss.
Layout of an ESSAY
Paragraph 1: Repeat in your own words points 1&2. Explain them and give your opinion.

Paragraph 2: Repeat in your own words points 3&4. Explain them and give your opinion.

Paragraph 3 (optional): Give your views on the matter if you feel there is more to add.

Conclusion: Summarize the key points.

Part 2a. (optional) ARTICLE.

Tips

Tip 1. Your article will be published. Who will be the readers?

If you address your Peers use Lively - Informal language.

If you address General Readers use Neutral - Formal language.

Tip 2. Pay attention to what are you asked to do?

- To narrate an event?
- To describe a place or a person?
- To discuss an argumentative issue?

Tip 3. Write a catchy title.

Part 2b. (optional) LETTER.

Tip 1. Your letter will be formal. It may be addressed to an editor, a head teacher or a
director. Make sure you use the formal remarks

Yours Faithfully

Tip 2. Pay attention to what are you asked to do?

- To narrate an event?
- To describe a place or a person?
- To discuss an argumentative issue?

Part 2c. (optional) REPORT.

Tip 1. Your report will be neutral, descriptive and factual. It is addressed to one person (a
supervisor, a director or a colleague)

Tip 2. Make sure you write the following on the upper left part of your page :

- To: [the name of the person this report is addressed to]


From: [your name/nickname]
Subject: [a general title e.g comparison between X and B]

Tip 3: Don’t forget to use appropriate subheadings above each and every paragraph

Part 2d. (optional) REVIEW.

Tip 1. Your review might be of a) a book, b) a film / play, c) a CD or a place (restaurant


/hotel/ shopping center/ sports center etc)

Tip 2. You need to be informative and use vocabulary specialized in the topic.

Tip 3. Don’t forget: the ultimate purpose of the review is to make a recommendation so
you focus on the positive points (you may mention one or two negative points but make
sure you do so in a subtle way)

Tip 4: it’s a good idea to write a simple title (e.g THE BLACK SWAN or THE MALL
ATHENS)

Introduction. Give practical details of the subject of the


review: Name, Place, Time etc.

Paragraph 1: Describe aspect 1 of the subject.
