MATH 10 3.

How many terms should be added in the sequence

1ST QUARTER 3, 6, 9 , 12, … to sum up 165?
HANDOUTS 7 a1 = 3 , d = 3, Sn = 165
TOPIC: ARITHMETIC SERIES n
Sn=
2
[ 2 a1+ ( n−1 ) d ]
To find the sum of an arithmetic sequence given the first
and the nth term, use n
165= [ 2(3)+ ( n−1 ) 3 ]
n 2
Sn= ( a1+ an ).
2 n
165= [ 6+3 n−3 ]
2
If the nth term is not given, then expand the formula for the 2
nth term 330=3 n+3 n
n
Sn= ( a1+ an ) 3 n2 +3 n−330=0
2
2 n +n−110=0
n ( n−10 ) ( n+11 )=0
Sn= ( a1+ a1 + ( n−1 ) d )
2 n−10=0 n+11=0
n n=10 n=−11
Sn= (2 a1 + ( n−1 ) d)
2
Reject n=−11 since sequence is define on positive integer only.
Examples: The number of terms is 10.
1. Find the sum of the first 10 terms of the arithmetic
sequence 21, 26, 31, 46, … . 3. Find the sum of the terms of the arithmetic sequence 3, 10, 17, 24,
31, 38, 45, 52, 59.
First find a30 by substituting a1 = 21, d = 5, and n = 10 a1 = 3
into the formula an = 59
an = a1 + (n – 1)d n=9
a10 = 21 + (10 – 1)5 n
a10 = 21 + (9)5 Sn= ( a ¿ ¿ 1+ an )¿
a10 = 21 + 45 2
a10 = 66
9
S9 = (3+59)
Solve for S30 by substituting n with 30, a1 = 21, and 2
a30 = 166 into the formula
n 9
Sn= ( a1+ an ) S9 = (62)
2 2
10
S10= ( 21+66 ) S9 =279
2
S10 =5 ( 87 )
4. Find the arithmetic series of the first 10 terms of the arithmetic
S10 =435 sequence 20, 17, 14, 11, … .
a1 = 20
an = ?
2. Find the sum of the arithmetic series 11 + 15 + 19 + n = 10
… + 87. d = -3
n
an = 87 ; a1 = 11 ; d = 4 Sn= (2 a ¿ ¿ 1+(n−1) d) ¿
2
To get the number of terms, we use 10
an = a1 + (n – 1)d S10= [ 2 ( 20 ) + ( 10−1 ) (−3 ) ]
87 = 11 + (n – 1)4 2
87 = 11 + 4n – 4 S10=5 [ 40+ 9 (−3 ) ]
80 = 4n
20 = n S10=5 [ 40+(−27) ]
S10=5 [ 13 ]
Now, find the sum of the first 20 terms.
n S10=65
Sn= ( a1+ an )

5. Find the sum of each arithmetic series described by a 1 = 50, 20 = 4 + 2n – 2
n = 25 and d = -4 20 = 2 + 2n
6. Find the sum of first 40 terms of the series 18 = 2n

8. The first term of an arithmetic sequence is 5, the last term is n
45 and the sum is 400. Find the number of terms and Sn= ( a ¿ ¿ 1+ an )¿
common difference. 2
9. In an arithmetic sequence 60, 56, 52, 48, ... starting from 9
the first term, how many terms are needed so that their sum S9 = ( 4 +20 )
2
is 368 ?
10. Find the sum of all 3 digit natural numbers, which are 9
S9 = (24 )
divisible by 9. 2
S9 =108
There are 108 cans in the display.
