IELTS Writing Task 1: how to write the 'overview'

 Used to describe the general features of a graph, chart or diagram  An

overview is a summary of the information by selecting and reporting the main
features, and make comparisons where relevant.

MỘT SỐ LƯU Ý KHI VIẾT PHẦN OVERALL (TỪ 1-2 CÂU)

1. Don't put any numbers in your overview. Save specific numbers for the 'details'
paragraphs (Chú ý kể cả nói cái gì lớn nhất/ nhỏ nhất cũng tuyệt đối không đưa số
liệu vào overall)
2. If the graph or chart shows a time period (e.g. years), look for the overall
change from the beginning to the end of the period (e.g. from the first year to the
last year). [Thường sẽ gặp ở dạng line graph hoặc bar chart]. Ask questions like:
 What does the data do from the start to the finish?
 Do they generally go up or down, or do they fluctuate?
 Any significant difference from the general trend?
 Overall increase/decrease?
 Peaks/lows?
3. Look for overall trends, and ignore individual figures that don't fit the trend.
For example, if a graph shows a rising trend overall, you can ignore a specific year
when the figures decreased - save that year for your 'details' paragraphs.

xem ở cuối giai đoạn đó sự vật/ hiện tượng phát triển tới mức nào, đang ở cao hơn hay thấp
hơn so với điểm xuất phảt ban đầu, lưu ý overall change chứ chưa tính tới fluctuations vội
 Xem xét xem nó có upward/ downward trend or tendency.
4. If no time period is shown, you can't look for trends. Instead, look
for differences and similarities between items (Trong trường hợp đề bài cho không
có sự thay đổi của một đối tượng nào đó theo chuỗi thời gian mà cho kiểu theo
nhóm tuổi/ giới tính hoặc cái gì đó random không theo mốc thời gian  Chú ý
nhìn vào sự giống nhau và khác biệt giữa các nhóm để từ đó gộp nhóm đối tượng
kèm theo đặc điểm đặc trưng của nhóm đối tượng đó)
 What are the most noticeable differences?
 Any similarities?
 Any significant exceptions?
5. If the task is to describe a diagram or map that compares things, you can
mention the main differences and maybe the number of differences and / or
similarities between the two diagrams. (Nếu đề cho kiểu “compares, contrast cgi
against cái gì” thì tự hiểu là mình nên chỉ ra điểm khác biệt nổi bật, nhưng phải nhìn
ra được cái overall và outstanding nha)
6. If the task is to describe a process diagram, you can mention the total number of
stages in the process and say where or how the process begins and ends.
7. Start your overview with a simple phrase that clearly shows the examiner that
this is your summary paragraph e.g. It is clear that... , It is noticeable that... ,
Overall we can see that...
8. If there are two different charts, write one overview sentence about each chart.
And even if there are more than two charts, they must be connected in some way, so
look for two main features overall.
