Burning Man has been close to the hearts of San Franciscans. Every year thousands of people in the Bay Area migrate to the Black Rock Desert to create the third-largest city in Nevada for one week. The key to enjoying Burning Man is being prepared for the intense environmental conditions you will face there. From the 107 weather to the fast-and-furious sand storms, the Black Rock Desert is an unforgiving place that can send the unprepared home early.

A time-honored Burning Man tradition, this quick and easy shelter is inexpensive and highly resilient. What you will need: 3 20-foot lengths of 2 PVC pipe 6 2-foot lengths of #4 rebar opaque plastic sheeting cable ties hammer crowbar

Start by pounding 2 of the lengths of rebar 1 into the ground 8-10 apart.

Insert one end of a PVC pipe length over one piece of rebar, and curve it over and insert the other end over the other piece of rebar Repeat steps one and two, placing the ends of the PVC pipe every 60 around in a circle. Secure the PVC at the apex of the dome with cable ties. Cover the frame with white, opaque plastic sheeting, securing the sheeting to the frame with cable ties. Leave an opening where the plastic meets.

When you leave, use the crowbar to remove the rebar from the ground (a 2 length of galvanized pipe works as well). Remember that Burning Man is a Leave no trace event, so be sure to leave the playa exactly as you found it.
