Macrophages

Camila, Cresia and Beatriz

What is “MACROPHAGE”
They are specialised cells involved
in the detection, phagocytosis and
destruction of bacteria and other
harmful organisms. In addition,
they can also present antigens to
T cells and initiate inflammation by
releasing molecules that activate
other cells
Where it came from

originate from blood monocytes that leave

the circulation to differentiate in different
tissues. There is a substantial heterogeneity
among each macrophage population, which
most probably reflects the required level of
specialisation within the environment of any
given tissue.
Types of Macrophage

Alveolar (Lung alveoli) Splenic (Spleen

marginal zone)
Phagocytosis of small Elimination of
particles, dead cells or dysfunctional or old red
bacteria. Initiation and blood cells.
control of immunity to
respiratory pathogens

Kupffer cell (Liver) Microglia (CNS)

Initiate immune Elimination of old or dead
responses and hepatic neurons and control of
tissue remodelling immunity in the brain.
Function

Homeostasis
Many physiological processes beyond
innate immunity
Metabolic function
Clearance of cellular debris
Tissue repair and remodeling
Cell mutation
Moreover, macrophage function and
phenotype are impacted by various
factors in physiological and
pathological conditions, such as diet
and cytokines. The alteration of
macrophage phenotype or polarization
is associated with distinct gene
expression profiles .
characteristics

It is large.
Its core is big.
It is derived from the connective tissue of the
monocyte.
It is rich in lysosomes.
It has on its surface numerous fingerlike extensions.
TAKEAWAYS
Beatriz Cancian: these cells are very important for our human body since
they defend us from bacteria and help us not to get sick or make it more
difficult for it to happen.
Kevin Garza: This topic is very interesting since macrophages are very
important since they help phagocytosis as well as being part of innate
cellular immunity.
Camila Hdz: It’s important to know the characteristics of the macrophage
cells to have the knowledge of what does this cell do, how is composed and
what are the types of macrophages that exists and what they do.
Cresia Ibarra: They help protect the body from other cells that can harm or
make it sick.
know its characteristics and how it is formed, to know where it can be
