Technical Description - Introduction System Overview _ 3.2 Precautions and Safety Instructions _3.4 Spirit Live 4 Technical Manual 3.1 System Overview Designed by engineers who understand the individual needs of musicians, SPIRIT Live 4 bas been built to the highest standards using quality Japanese components and employing automated assembly techniques beyond the reach of most manufacturers of compact mixers. ‘A rugged steel chassis is combined with moulded side trims to give protection and distinctive appearance. Custom moulded controls, designed forthe best ‘feel’ and ‘visual clarity complement the styling, resulting na truly professional product which is ideal for both touring and fixed PA installations. Frame Sizes ‘SPIRIT Live 4 is available in the following frame sizes: © 12 Channel © 16 Channel © 24Channel © 32Channel ‘The 12 and 16 channel sizes may be extended by adding an 8 channel Expander. ‘The Expander can be attached quickly and securely to the console, requiring only a screwdriver to complete the installation, Input Channel “The input channels are able to accept a wide range of Microphone and Line level signals from separate input sockets. Every channel features wide range gain control and Line input pad, 3-band ‘Equalisation with swept Mid and LF range, plusa Hi-Pass tte, 5 Auxiliary Sends, PFL(Pre Fade Listen), Peak LED, Panning to a Stereo Bus and routing in pairs to four Output Groups. Each channel has a separate Direct Output and is controlled ‘by a high-quality long throw fader. Stereo Sections ‘All frame sizes are provided as standard with dedicated stereo inputs, arranged in pairs. One pair is included on the 12 channel frame and two pairs on all other frame sizes. Each stereo input includes a 2-band EQ and a single auxiliary send control with switching which allows prefade or postfade sourcing with access to three of the five ary busses. The stereo channel signal may be routed to either the Mix output or to Groups 1 & 2 (upper) or Groups 3 & 4 (lower). Group Sections ‘The four Output Groups provide submixing to the Mix L/R outputs or may feed ‘extemal equipment directly. Each incorporates stereo panning and PFL monitoring, ‘orbargraph metering and includes an external Return input for effects or submixing from extemal sources. 3.2 Spirit Live 4 Technical Manual Master Section “The Master section provides master level control for the Left, Right, Mono and ‘Auxiliary Send busses, with separate AFL monitoring on each Auxiliary Send and the Mono output. ‘The Mix L/R and Group outputs all have insert points forthe connection of external signal processing. Comprehensive Talkback facilities are provided, which allow an external talkback microphone to be routed to Mix L/R, Groups and Auxes 1 & 2 as required. Six 12-segment, 3-colour peak reading LED bargraph meters provide clear display of ‘MixLUR, Group and PFL signals. Pressing any PFL or AFL switch puts the selected signal onto both sides of the headphones output, and the right bargraph meter. Frame Construction SPIRIT Live 4 is based on a folded steel frame for on-he-road reliability, with an integral carrying handle and single section front panel supporting all the channels ‘and input and output connectors. Custom moulded side trims and armrest provide protection and a distinctive appearance. Bus Connections via Ribbon Cable ‘The main motherioom is made from flexible ribbon cable and makes use of insulation displacement technology for maximum reliability. Power Supply ‘The SPIRIT Live 4 should only be used with the correct Soundcraft Power Supply unit as follows: © 12, 16 and 24 channel frames require the DCP100 power supply. ‘* 32 channel frames require the CPS150 power supply. Spirit Live 4 Technical Manual 3.3 Precautions and Safety Instructions General Precautions Caution! ‘Avoid storing or using the mixing console in conditions of excessive heat or cold, or in positions where itis likely to be subject to vibration, dust or moisture, Do not use any liquids to clean the fascia of the unit: a soft dry brush is ideal. Use only ‘water orethyl alcohol to clean the trim and scribble strips. Other solvents may cause damage to paint or plastic pants. Avoid using the console close to strong sources of electromagnetic radiation (eg. video monitors, high power electric cabling): this may cause degradation of the audio quality due to induced voltages in connecting leads and chassis. For the ssame reason, always site the console power supply away from the unit {n all cases, refer servicing to qualified personnel. Handling and Transport ‘The console is supplied ina rugged cardboard box. This packing should be retained foruse as protection f the console is moved any distance after installation. Be sure to disconnect all cabling before moving. If the console is to be regularly moved (€g. for touring) we recommend that itis installed in a foam lined flight case. A shoulder-strap carrying bag is also available forthe 8 and 16 channel frames to give light protection during transit. At all times avoid applying excessive force to any ‘knobs, switches or connectors. Power supplies & cables Always make sur that the power supply has been set othe same source vollage as Warning! the mains supply. ‘Always use the power supply and power cable supplied with the mixer: the use of alternative supplies may cause damage and voids the warranty; the extension of ower cables may result in malfunction of the mixing console. Always switchrthe power supply off before connecting or disconnecting the console power cable or opening the mixer for servicing. In the event of an electrical storm, or large mains voltage fluctuations, immediately switch off the PSU and unplug from the mains. 34 Spirit Live 4 Technical Manual Signal Levels 1t is important to supply the correct input levels to the console, otherwise signal-to-noise ratio or distortion performance may be degraded; and in extreme ‘cases damage to the internal circuitry may result. Likewise, on all balanced inputs avoid sources with large common mode DC, AC ot RF voltages, as these will reduce, the available signal range on the inputs. Note that OdBu = 0.775V RMS. ‘The microphone input is designed for use with balanced low impedance (150 or 200 ‘ohm) microphones. DO NOT use unbalanced microphones or battery powered condenser microphones with the +48V phantom power switched on: degraded performance or damage to the microphone may result. The +48V phantom ‘Power may be removed from individual channels by removing an internal link, and this procedure is described in Chapter 8. ‘The sensitivity of the microphone input is variable from -10dBu to -604Bu (for OdBu at the outputs), and the maximum input level (balanced) is 20dB above the. set sensitivity that is, with the gain control at minimum, the maximum input level {s+10dBu. Although the microphone input can thus handle some line level signals, ‘we don't recommend this, since the source may be unduly loaded by the low (2k) input impedance, or be damaged by the +48V phantom power. The line inputs have a sensitivity variable between 40dBu and +10dBu, and can also handle a maximum input level up to 200B above the set value. Note that the ‘maximum input level for unbalanced inputs is 4 or SdB less than that for balanced signals, so very high level unbalanced signals (c.g. loudspeaker outputs of power amplifiers) may cause distortion. The input impedance is approximately 10k®2, and thus high impedance sources (eg. electric guitars) may be loaded too heavily. Such sources are best fed through an extemal DI (Direct Inject) box to the microphone inpat ‘The main outputs (Auxes, Mix, Mono and Groups) ofthe console have a nominal ‘output level of +44Bu, and an impedance of 752. These outputs will deliver full level of +214Bu into loads of greater than Sk. Secondary outputs, such as Insert Sends have 2 nominal output level of OdBu and an output impedance of 750, and ‘will deliver the fall output level of +214Bu into load impedances of greater than 5. ‘Spirit Live 4 Technical Manual 35 3.6 Spirit Live 4 Technical Manual 4. Functional Descriptions Input Channel _4.2 Stereo Sections 4.6 Group Section 4.8 Master Section 4.9 Spirit Live 4 Technical Manual 44 | ay Teer Microphone Input 1 The Microphone input is viaa standard female XLR-3 connector and is available ‘when the LINE -204B switch is released. It is designed to accept a wide range of balanced or unbalanced low impedance input signals. +48V Phantom Power is available on each input microphone socket. This is switched on globally from the power supply in the case of the 12, 16 and 24 channel desks, or from a rocker switch adjacent tothe d.c. power connector at te top right of the 32 channel desk. Should you wish to configure inputs without +48V power, see Section 8 for detls of this modification, ‘Transformer-coupled dynamic microphones may be used without causing damage, even when the +48V power is connected, bot care must be taken when using ‘unbalanced sources, because of the voltage present on pins 2 and 3 of the XL connector. Microphone input level is set by the GAIN control(6). NOTE: Phantom powered mics should not be plugged in with the +48V switched ‘on. Also you should be aware that some microphones draw an unusually large curreat which may overload the power supply, resulting in distortion. Consult your microphone supplier for guidance if necessary. Direct Output 2. A DIRECT output is provided, nominal level OdBu, fed from the output of the fader buffer, which is therefore unaffected by the position of the ROUTING switches or PAN control. This provides an ideal source for external processing "units, the output of which may be brought back tothe console through the STEREO sections or group RETURNS, or to directly send to the tracks ofa tape machine for ‘multitrack recording. This provides as many Tape Sends as there are mixer channels, without using the group or mix outputs. Line input 3 The LINE Input is a 3-pole Va"'A’ gauge jack socket, to accept balanced or ‘unbalanced line level sources when the LINE switch(5) is pressed. Unlike the low ‘impedance Microphone input, this stage presents a high impedance(>10kS2) to the {npot signal, enabling many types of instruments to be plugged straight in without DAL boxes or extemal preamplifiers. Line inputs will be found useful as extra Effects Retums, where additional post-effect equalisation is required. 42 Spirit Live 4 Technical Manual Insert 4 The INSERT is a break point in the input channel signal path. It allows the signal to be taken out ofthe mixer, through an extemal piece of equipment and then back into the mixer to continue through tothe final output. The Insert is a3-pole V4" “AY gauge Jack Socket, which is normally by-passed. When a jack plug is inserted, the signal path is broken ata point just after the Hi-Pass Filter, but before the EQ section. The signal from the channel appears on the TIP of the plug and is returned on the RING. The insert point allows limiters, compressors and other signal processing units to be added as required to particular input channels and because itis located PRE EQ, noise generated by the external equipment may be reduced by a small amount of FLF. cut in the Equaliser. Line Select 5 ‘The LINE switch selects Line input when pressed, and Microphone input when released. When Line is selected the-Gain range is reduced by 20dB (sce 6 below). Gain Control 6 When the Microphone input is selected this control acts as a SENSITIVITY control covering a 50dB range. Channel signal level increases as the control is ‘ured clockwise. When the Line inputis selected it serves as a GAIN control, with the scaling reduced by -204B from the printed scale. A nominal OdB input signal ‘will pass through at unity gain, with the knob set atthe 204B position. Some audio equipment, particularly that intended for domestic use, operates at a oominal -10dBV level and an increased Gain setting will be required. HI-Pass Filter 7 Pressing this switch inserts a 124B per octave 100Hz Hi-Pass Filter inthe signal path, immediately after the input amplifier. This is particularly useful on live ‘vocals, and its use is strongly recommended, even on male vocals. It can also be used for filtering out low frequency bum, Equaliser 8 The Equaliser(BQ) comprises three sections. The upper control provides HLF (treble) boost and cut of #/-15dB. The lower two pairs of knobs are arranged sa cul/boost contsal dower knob) of +/- 15dB, and a SWEEP( frequency) control ‘which determines at which frequency the boost/cut action will be centered, The LF sections are essentially Swept Low Frequency controls, covering a range from 40 to 400Hz and providing much greater flexibility than a conventional LF(bass) control. The MID section, with a frequency range from 250Hz to 8kHz is particularly versatile for vocals, enabling particular characteristics ofthe singer to be lifted or suppressed very precisely. Spirit Live 4 Technical Manual 43 rw Pr TT a I r t a 10 sh: ®. [ 7 a ERERERE Bape! EI is Auxiliary Sends 9 These controls route the input channel signal to any one or more Auxiliary busses. These are separate from the main outputs and can therefore provide Additional outputs for foldback, echo units or extra loudspeaker ‘fills’. ‘AUX 1 & 2 are detived before the channel fader(PRE FADE), and are therefore ‘unaffected by the fader position. This makes them particularly suitable for foldback ‘or monitor feeds, which need to be controlled separately from the main P.A. mix. AUX 3, 4 and 5 are derived after the channe! fader(POST FADE), and therefore follow any changes in fader level. They are normally used 10 drive effects processing units which are fed back into the mixer and which must fade out with the input channel. AUX 2 may be altered internally to be POST FADE. Refer to the Section 8 for a description of this modification. All of the Aux Sends are muted when the ON switch(12) is released. ‘The Pre-Fade source to Aux 1 and 2 may be fairly easily changed to be pre-EQ on later models. Consult your dealer and see page 5.2 for details. Pan 10 The PAN control determines the position of the signal within the stereo mix image or may be used to route the channel signal to particular output GROUPS as selected by the ROUTING SWITCHES (13). Rotation fully anticlockwise feeds the signal solely to the Left mix buss or Groups 1 and 3, while rotation clockwise ‘sweeps the image tothe right buss or Groups 2 and 4. PFL/Peak LED 11 When the PFL switch is pressed, the Pre-Fade signal is fed to the headphones, where it replaces the selected source. The PFL/AFL LED on the master section illuminates to war that the headphones and the meters are now responding to the PFL/AFL selection and the PFL LED on the input channel lights to identify the active channel, This isa useful way of listening to any required input signal without {interrupting the main mix, for making adjustments or tracing problems. When the PFL switch is released the LED on the channel serves as a PEAK indicator, to war when an excessively high signal level is present in the channel, ‘The signal is sampled at two points in the channel, immediately after the input amplifier (PRE HI-PASS FILTER) and POST EQ. The Peak LED will illuminate approximately 44B before clipping and therefore give waming of a possible ‘overload even if the peaks are removed by extemal equipment plugged into the Insert. ON Switch 12 The ON switch enables all outputs from the channel when pressed, and the associated LED illuminates to show that the channel is active. 44 Spirit Live 4 Technical Manual Routing Switches 13 The input channel signal may be routed to the main STEREO MIX (L-R) or pairs of GROUP busses (1-2, 3-4), by pressing the respective switches. ‘These may be used in conjunction with the PAN control (10 above) to route the channe! signal proportionately to any of the selected ‘busses. Channel Fader 14 This long throw fader determines the proportion ofthe channel in ‘the mix and provides a clear visual indication of channel level. Normal ‘operating position is atthe “O* mark, providing 10dB of gain above that point if required. Spirit Live 4 Technical Manual 45 Stereo Sections Stereo Inputs 1 Each Stereo Input section comprises a pair of similar inputs. The inputs are electronically balanced and separate jacks are provided forthe Left and Right source signals. A mono signal may be plugged into the upper socket only for each pair to be fed equally to left and right busses. -10 Switch 2 The input jacks are normally set to match +4dBu nominal signal levels. Pressing the -10 switch alters the input sensitivity to match the -10dBV signals from most [Hi-Fi systems or semi-professional tape machines allowing the inputs to be quickly ‘switched to match, for instance, a cassette player for pre-show music. Equalisation ‘3 Each Stereo Input is provided with a 2-band shelving EQ section giving +154B boost & cut at fixed frequencies of 60H and 12kHz. Aux Send 4 A single control feeds a mono sum of the stereo signal to a choice of Aux Send. busses (see 5 below). These tests include individual testing of every function on all the PCB's, a thorough testing of all the functions of the completed mixer, a soak test of two bours before the final test (which consists of listening, measuring and ‘mechanical function checks) prior to packaging and shipment. In this way we try to ensure that any faulty components sbow up long before the console leaves the company. Thus a ong and trouble-free life can be expected. Although all Soundcraft consoles have been designed with long-term reliability in ‘mind, itis inevitable that occasional maintenance will be required. However, due to the amount of attention given to the problems of maintenance during the design stages of this console, and the modular construction, servicing tends to be extremely simple to carry out, withthe minimum of test equipment needed to isolate andrectfy faults. 8.3 Umar} With the exception of the electronically balanced microphone amplifier, and the hybrid discrete/op amp summing amps, all signal electronics are configured around high slew rate, low noise integrated circuits. The microphone amplifier is a proprietary design, utilising a discrete transistor, low noise cancelling front end. The use of integrated circuits means thatthe majority of audio faults can be repaired by simply replacing the I.C,, having fist isolated the fault to a particular stage in the signal chain, ‘The isolation can often be done without even having to remove the module from the console, by judicious use of insert points, and/or switching the module to various modes. As with all servicing, a good knowledge of signal flow is necessary for best results, and a time spent becoming thoroughly familiar with the console block diagrams will be very helpful. Basic Principles Each channel should be viewed as a number of signal blocks, through which the signal must flow. If the signal appears atthe input toa block, but not atthe output, then the fault clearly lies within that block. By dividing a channel into individual sections, what may at first appear to be an extremely complicated piece of equipment can be simplified intoa series of sequential stages. This is the basic first ‘move inall types of fault finding, and usually requires no more than a certain amount of logical thought. Servicing a console is more a matter of clear thinking and having an understanding of what should be happening, than having a highly developed technical knowledge. To illustrate the method of logical fault finding, let us assume that we have a ‘non-functioning input channel, in both microphone and line modes. ‘+The first step is to ensure that a fault really does exist! Check that the channel is in the comect mode of operation, and that no jacks are inserted in the insert points which may be interrupting the signal flow. Check also thatthe expected input signa is actually present by plugging it into another channel. ‘© Ifin doubt about the channel operation, set up an adjacent channel in exactly the same way, which will allow a direct comparison between a working and possible non-working channel, ‘© Route the channel directly to L-R, so thatthe channel may be monitored inthe ‘normal way. Using an oscillator set it to approximately IkHz and patch the oscillator signal into the channet Line Input. Ifall is wel, an undistorted signal should now be heard. More likely, because of the fault, it won't ‘© Route channels to differents outputs or to auxiliary sends to identify problems (on the Master section, ‘© Use PFL and AFL to monitor the signal a selected points. Large sections of the channel circuitry can be by-passed by monitoring the signal atthe insert send, or by feeding the insert send directly with the line level source. I by-passing a section causes the signal to re-appear, then the fault is located in that section, and can be traced at component level and the faulty components replaced after removing the channel from the front panel or the PCB may be replaced as a complete assembly. Integrated circuits, due to their internal complexity, are the ‘most likely cause of problems, followed by mechanical components such as switches and faders, which are susceptible to physical contamination from ‘oxidation, dust and liquids, Spirit Live 4 Technical Manual aah Lae) nnel Ca Warning! The removal of circuit boards and the replacement of components requires care and skill In soldering to avoid damage to the PCB and should only be attempted by competent technicians. Always check that power has been removed trom the console before attempting to release the top panel or remove PCBs. Removal of Top Panel Place the console om a flat, clear surface, allowing plenty of space in which to work and undo the screws on both the top and base. With the console base down with the faders towards you, hold the top panel by the frontextrusion and lif the panel upwards while sliding gently wo the rear to separate it from the base. With the base removed, access is now available to all parts of the console, and the signal may be traced through the various stages, using an oscilloscope, millivoltmeter, or even high impedance headphones. Removal of PCBs Replacement of components will often require removal of the relevant PCB from the top panel following the procedure below: ‘© Unplug the motherioom connector from as many channels as necessary toallow clearance to remove the required PCB. Unplug any other connectors, noting carefully their location for reassembly. ‘+ Remove all knobs on the particular channel by pulling finmly upwards. ‘+ Undo the plastic nuts securing jack sockets where applicable. '* Undo the nuts securing the pots to the panel, taking care to avoid scratching, the panel. + Undo the two screws securing XLR connectors (where appropriate) and also the two screws holding the fader. ‘¢ The PCB may now be removed from the panel for repair or replacement.
