The news is a textual genre that aims to INFORM
day-to-day facts, relevant to society. It can be said,
then, that the news has the social function of
REPORTING, DESCRIBING, in a brief and
objective way, real, true and important facts, which
are beyond the ordinary, everyday normality.
Therefore, the NEWS is a relatively short and
objective report, written in 3rd person (in which the
narrator is an observer and tells the facts). The
language used is FORMAL, with its referential,
denotative function.
WAR IN UKRAINE: RUSSIA INVADES THE

The escalation of tension between Russia
and Ukraine in recent days culminated in attacks by
land, air and sea, which began in the early hours of
Thursday (24). Days after a series of threats and
having recognized the independence of two
separatist provinces in eastern Ukraine, Russian
President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine.
Cities such as Kiev and Kharkiv, the country's two
largest, were attacked with missiles and bombs.
Russian troops also landed in Odessa, which is on
the shores of the Black Sea, and crossed the

another 316 were injured in Ukraine after the
Russian attacks, Ukrainian Health Minister Oleh

Bombing continued in the breakaway region
of Donetsk, according to the deputy defense
minister. A US official told Reuters that the
Russians fired more than 160 missiles at Ukrainian
targets. Ukraine says the invasion is "total".
In response, Volodymyr Zelensky, President
of Ukraine, said the country reacted, killing 50
soldiers, destroying 4 Russian tanks and shooting
down 6 aircraft. Zelensky also claimed that he
distributed weapons to the people and that the
country has adopted martial law (when military
rules replace the common civil laws of a country).
On the streets of Ukraine, the images show
the scene of chaos: queues at gas stations, rushes
to supermarkets for groceries, traffic jams and
crowded train stations. Zelensky further said that
his country was "left alone" to defend itself against
Russian invasion. The Ukrainian leader also called
for a general mobilization of all men aged between
18 and 60 to enlist in the Armed Forces.
