BACKGROUND

- cultural communities located around the Zamboanga peninsula


- among the first settlers in the island of Mindanao
- “Suba” – river
- Subanun/Subanon/Subanen

SLIDE 2

- as implied by their name, they originally resided near rivers in low-lying areas
- driven inland by migration of other migrant groups: Tausug, Yakan, migrant Cebuanos
- Yakan migration (200-300 B.C.) drove the Subanen out of Basilan
- Flexible nature:
o if greater in number, assert their territorial rights
o if outnumbered, would move to other places or assimilate with majority group

HISTORY
- settled in Zamboanga peninsula in 4 200 B.C.
- Datu M’ndanao and Bai M’lindang
o gave their names to the island of Mindanao and Mount Malindang (in Misamis
Occidental
- Datu M’guindanao – settled in Maguindanao

 Datu N’wang – Zamboanga City, developed into trading and barter capital
