5. Pavement Design
(i) Pavement design shall be carried out in accordance with the provision of relevant
Manual.
(ii) Type of Pavement
Type of pavement shall be flexible.
(iii) Design Requirements
a) Design Period and strategy
Flexible pavement for new pavement or for widening and strengthening of the existing
pavement shall be designed for a minimum design period of 20 years. Stage construction shall
not be permitted.
b) Design Traffic
Notwithstanding anything to the contrary contained in this Agreement or the Manual, the
Contractor shall design the pavement for minimum design traffic in million standard axles as
tabulated below or actual traffic as per traffic survey whichever is more-

Service roads, slip roads and connecting road shall be design for 10 MSA for flexible
pavement.
To ensure internal drainage of the pavement structure, the granular sub-base layer shall extend
to full width across the shoulders in the embankment. Pavement layers of the paved shoulder
shall be same as that of the adjacent carriageway.
c) Strengthening of Existing flexible Pavement
The existing flexible pavement shall be strengthened suitably as per the manual to withstand
the above design traffic.
(iv) Rigid Pavement
The following section of the highways shall be constructed with rigid pavement.
