Direction. Check your understanding of the lessons by answering the following questions:

1. Do you think the English we use in the Philippines is one variety of English language? If yes,
give examples of English words that we use but are not present in other varieties.
I think the English we use here in the Philippines is also one variety of English language.
We have different words that are customized or is made here in the Philippines. For example, the
word “chancing” here means that a person tends to do a move or taking a chance in a sexual
concept. On the other hand, the word chancing in other variety of English simply means that they
are taking a chance for a certain thing or to do something risky to achieve the desired outcome.
2. How do you feel when speaking with native speakers of English?
Whenever I speak English in front of native English speakers, I always feel inferior.
There are times that they were not able to understand what I am saying simply because we have
different understanding of some words. Pronunciation also matters a lot, there was a time that I
do not know what they are saying because how they speak, it was to slang to there are instances
that I do not know what they are talking about because there are some letters that is being eaten.
3. How can you improve your spelling of English words as a non-native speaker of English
language?
Whenever I encounter difficulty in spelling some English words such as the comparison
of American and British English I always go to dictionary. I always choose the American
English spelling so that I am able to know their differences and similarities. I’ve been trying so
hard to improve my English speaking and spelling ability just so I am able to express myself in
an understandable manner.
4. What are the particular English words that you always have difficulty in writing them in
correct spelling?
I have always been so confused in writing the words believe, receive, consciousness and
continuous. I have been always checking it in dictionary or in google just so I am sure that my
spelling is correct.
Reflection
What is ethnocentrism? Why do we need to avoid ethnocentrism when addressing audiences
with diverse cultural, racial, or ethnic backgrounds?
Ethnocentrism is the way you see that your way of living or thinking is correct.
Ethnocentrism in simple words means that you are using yourself as your preference. The reason
why we need to avoid being ethnocentric when we are addressing some tourist or audiences is
simply to avoid misunderstanding. Being ethnocentric in from of different races of people can
cause too much conflict. Misunderstanding may arise and we might degrade their beliefs and
point of view. So, we have to be careful when addressing the audiences with diverse cultural,
racial and/or ethnic backgrounds.
