WHY SHOULD WE USE BAMBOO
INSTEAD OF PLASTIC?
Plastic is ubiquitous and being used inevitably by everyone every day. Because plastic is easy and
cheap to produce, durable and lightweight. And due to its versatility, plastic has gained popularity. The
use-and-throw approach to plastic has made a huge impact on our environment today. And what's
more frightening is that people are not aware that plastic affects health and have overlooked its side
effects. This colossal dependence and reliance on plastic has led to the production of 348 million
tonnes of plastic a year. Shockingly, only 10% of the plastic is being reused or recycled.

Here are 5 reasons why bamboo is so great:

1. Bamboo is the fastest-growing plant on earth

Bamboo is a highly sustainable plant. Bamboo can grow to full size in
just 3-4 months, compared to standard trees which can take 30+ years
to grow.
In the right conditions, it can grow 3 feet tall in 24 hours which means
you can literally watch it grow with your own eyes! This makes it a
super sustainable alternative due to its naturally renewing properties.
Plus, nasty pesticides and chemicals aren't required when harvesting
bamboo. This means the cultivation is natural, and never harms the
environment.
2. Bamboo is strong and durable
It’s no surprise that bamboo is often named as the new ‘green steel’
for its versatility and strength in construction, with entire homes now
being built entirely from this robust plant.

5
Bamboo has an astounding strength and lifespan whilst remaining light and easy to carry around. With
proper care, your bamboo goodies can be used time and time again without the worry of them
deteriorating.

3. Bamboo is safe and hygienic

Bamboo fibres are naturally anti-bacterial without needing any toxic chemical treatments, all thanks to
its substance called ‘bamboo kun’.
Bamboo kun is found in bamboo fibre and is an antimicrobial bio-agent which gives bamboo its natural
antibacterial properties. This prevents bacteria and microbes growing on bamboo products making it
the perfect plant for naturally hygienic products such as bamboo straws and cutlery, keeping
them sterile and fresh.

4.Bamboo is Great for the Environment

Bamboo forests have enormous positive benefits for the environment as this incredibly productive
plant efficiently stores carbon.

Bamboo absorbs 2x more carbon dioxide than trees, which is why they are known to act as carbon sinks.
It also generates a vast amount of oxygen, totalling up to 30% more than most plants and trees.
Finally, bamboo helps protect biodiversity and endangered species by creating homes for a variety of
different animals. Bamboo forests save and protect the species living in that forest, by providing both
homes and food. Don’t forget the giant pandas who rely on bamboo alone!

CRADLE TO GATE

An example of a cradle-to-gate product might be an aluminum

can of soda. The soda company can measure the impact of the
materials needed to create their soda, including the drink itself
and the choice of aluminum packaging, plus the impact of
shipping necessary to deliver that soda can to a store near you.
However, the soda company might assume that the consumer
will drink the soda and have the option to recycle the
remaining can, making it unnecessary for the company to
measure the final destination of their product.
CRADLE TO GRAVE

Finally, a cradle to grave analysis can also be performed

on a manufacturing process to understand the
environmental impact of the manufacturing processes
used. Example Eagle Tires Co. is a company that
manufactures tires for industrial and consumer purposes.
CRADLE TO CRADLE

• Long-Term Economic Growth

:• Environmental Conservation:

The aim of this paper is to explain why the

eco-effective Cradle to Cradle vision in
practice results in a mere eco-efficient
approach by discussing several conflicts
between theory and practice. This is
illustrated with a case study resulting in a
development method for Cradle to Cradle
compliant packaging.
