1 Scope
This standard specifies the properties for low-profile square weld nuts with metric standard threads
of M4 to M10; metric fine-pitch threads M8×1, M10×1, M12×1,5, and M14×1,5; and 7/16-20 UNF
threads. Product grade A applies to the square weld nuts in this standard.

2 Note for application

2.1 Design
Low-profile square weld nuts are suitable for threaded connections with bolts with a property class
≤6.8 as per DIN EN ISO 898-1[3].
Quenched and tempered low-profile square weld nuts are suitable for threaded connections with
bolts with a property classe of 8.8 or lower as per DIN EN ISO 898-1[3], similar to VW 01126-1[4].
See appendix A.
Square weld nuts with a higher load-bearing capacity are specified in VW 60449[5] (preferred
parts) and VW 60442[6].
NOTE 1: Due to their short thread length, low-profile square weld nuts as per VW 60432 must not
be used for new designs. In the case of designs being overhauled, these nuts must be replaced by
standard-profile square weld nuts as per VW 60449[5] (preferred parts) if possible.

2.2 Manufacturing
Low-profile square weld nuts are joined by means of resistance projection welding as per
VW 01103[7].
The appropriate Body Manufacturing department must be consulted before using low-profile
square weld nuts with thread sizes ≤M5, as handling problems may occur when these nuts are
transported to the body-in-white.
NOTE 2: VW 60560[8] specifies minimum cross-tension forces and minimum torques, as well as
requirements for checking projection welds after they are welded.

2.3 Sheets and sheet thicknesses

Flawless welding can only be ensured with sheets that have a carbon (C) content ≤0,25%. Consult
the appropriate Volkswagen AG department (Design Engineering, Laboratory, Joint Engineering)
when using steels with different grades. For sheet thickness specifications, see table 5.

4.6 Surface protection

4.6.1 Standard coating

Normally, square weld nuts are delivered with c340 surface protection as per TL 217.
Uncoated and quenched and tempered weld nuts must be pickled after quenching and tempering.
With uncoated weld nuts (quenched and tempered or not) corrosion can occur as early as during
storage or transport. The manufacturer must take suitable measures to provide protection against
corrosion without negatively affecting weldability.
Page 6
VW 60432: 2013-11

Other surface protection types as per VW 13750 are possible in consultation with the Standard and
Multi-Use Parts subdepartment (EKDV/3).
DIN EN ISO 6157-2 defines limits for surface flaws.

4.6.2 Additional coating

For uncoated weld nuts, an all-around coating as per TL 188-BSSL can be used. If a part with sur‐
face protection as per VW 13750 and TL 188-BSSL is used, the required surface protection type
must be agreed upon with the Laboratory.

4.7 Quality assurance/acceptance test

DIN EN ISO 16426 applies.

order information.

6 Marking
Low-profile square weld nuts with an M5 or larger thread must be marked with the manufacturer's
code. The code must be applied in a recessed manner in a place chosen by the manufacturer. If
possible, the side to be welded shall not be used for this purpose.
Packaging must be marked.

1) Suffix for material, surface, and type as per standard part drawing or master data list (MDL).
2) Standard parts as per this standard cannot be viewed in NVS (standard parts management system).

a) The sheet thicknesses are only a design recommendation.

b) In order to ensure exchangeability, the hole diameter specifications match those for hexagon weld nuts as per DIN 929 "Hexagon
weld nuts". However, they are not design-related for square weld nuts.
Other hole diameters are permissible, but must be agreed upon with Body Manufacturing first.
c) The specified values are production-related and are not specified in the production drawings. Restrictions due to function must be
agreed with the responsible Planning department and entered in the respective drawings.

Appendix A (informative) Design

The non-quenched and tempered nuts are suitable only for pairing with bolts with property class
≤6.8 as per DIN EN ISO 898-1[3]. This ensures that, even when the threaded joint is overstressed
(e.g. incorrect assembly), the bolt fractures in the free stressed thread area (or shank).
Explanation with the following examples using assembly beyond the elastic limit:
Example 1:
M10 bolt, property class 8.8; for assembly preloads, see VW 01126-2[9], 31 000 N to 41 500 N
In order to reliably avoid stripping the nut thread even in the case of overstressing, the preloads
taken into consideration for evaluating the pairing of bolts and nuts must be increased by another
10%.
The anticipated assembly preloads thus lie between 34 100 N and 45 650 N.
For M10 nuts, the testing force is 44 800 N; see table 3.
This means that in some cases where a nut (not quenched and tempered) is paired with a bolt of
property class 8.8, stripping of the nut thread would have to be expected.
Example 2:
M10 bolt, property class 8.8; for assembly preloads, see VW 01126-2[9], 31 000 N to 41 500 N
The expected assembly pre-loads are 10% higher, i.e., between 34 100 N and 45 650 N. With a
quenched and tempered nut with a testing force of 58 700 N as per table 4, there is no risk of strip‐
ped nut threads.
NOTE A.1: Theoretically, even 20% higher assembly pre-loads could occur with bolts having the
pertinent maximum strength and minimum coefficient of friction.
